That’s definitely a problem. I work in an international environment and I speak Swedish with my colleagues by default, when possible. Many times it ends up being some kind of swenglish in the beginning but thats ok.

Exactly, but I bet given some time and immersion in France he’d likely pick it up faster than most.

Oh true but I mean bilingual as in “mother tongue”, native speaking.

My English is strong but not anywhere near native. That’s also a point I’m making, when something is your second language you lose something in the soul of that language.

I read something really interesting by a Slovenian author. She said that every language is a universe in its own. I am bilingual, Swedish and Finnish, and even I can’t translate the unique expressions or sentiments between the two. It’s like I’m two different persons depending on the language.

As a person from Sweden: I think you just met a really downer of a person. I’d been impressed.

Look guys, of you plan to relocate over here in Europe you must try to learn the language. The thing is, most of us speak good to great English. Truth is that we absolutely prefer to speak our own language and mostly revert to it the moment you leave the room. Fluency isn’t important, just try.

As an foreigner it’s amazing to see this descent into North Korean style of propaganda. It’s so crude, so silly. Just a few years ago you Americans were laughing at this too. Now it’s your reality? The absurdity of it all.
