I think we have a nesting pair of Ferruginous Hawks near our house. Google wants to say they are Red Tailed Hawks. Any guidance?
A gravel road disappearing into leafless willow shrubs with a backdrop of snow-capped mountains. The Fern Lake Trailhead closes in the winter so you have to walk an extra 1/2 mile along the road to get there. This road SHOULD be completely covered in snow, but the East and Midwest has stolen all of our snowpack this year

The Big Thompson River almost completely covered in snow and ice snaking through pines and boulders. This is the same river that runs by my house 40 miles down stream. There's something magical/mystical/spiritual about visiting the headwaters of the river that feeds your community.
Dinner time. Impossible burger and cole slaw in front of a fire ring with an active fire. Last time we did this was New Year's Day and we got chased out after dinner by heavy blowing snow.
We did an afternoon walk up to The Pool on the Fern Lake Trail, cooked dinner and s'mores over the fire at the Sprague Lake Picnic area, and headed home to watch Song Sung Blue (what a good movie!)

Last weekend, we tried to hike up to Rock Cut to see the white tailed ptarmigan (these pictures are from almost exactly a year ago), but the constant 40mph headwinds turned us around.
We'll try again this weekend
