I did consider discarding a domino to go last, however this still requires tracking rounds and in 3/4 player games dominoes become VERY valuable (5/6 played per player per game). If there are any other turn order variations I should try I'd love to hear them! 6/6 π²β
I tried changing order based on the first player to place an invest cube in a round but keeping track of the rounds is a bit fiddly with the simplicity and speed of the game. I also tried highest domino in a round goes last but it has the same problem. 5/6
I've also considered alternating who goes last in a turn throughout the game but given the inherent simplicity of the game, any change to the turn order that I've tried, makes the game become unwieldy. 4/4 Simply moving the turn order one to the left each round doesn't work in 2/4 player games. 4/6
other players moves. The fix I'm testing is to give the last player in turn order one less domino which means they don't necessarily replace other players' last moves. This has been an interesting change in 2 player games. I still need to test it in 3-4 player games. 3/6
I'm testing one minor rule change for balance. Previously all players received the same number of dominoes and would end the game with at least 2 dominoes in hand. Because of the fixed turn structure, it can feel like the last player has a distinct advantage as they're always replacing... 2/6
Domino City game board on a pub table. Game one after ordering first course.
Domino City game board and cottage pie on a pub table. Game one ongoing. Moves can be made around food!
Score sheet on pub table. D went first, scored a total of 70 vs J's 58.
A selection of dominoes laid upright on their long edge. One domino is threatening to fall over but is valiantly staying up.
One nice thing about designing small games is you can sneak them in your bag (or never take them out) and then break them out for a tricky little play at lunch between courses! Tasty playtests! 1/6 π²β
You might notice that the jam actually runs for a bit more than 12 days. This allows participants time to catch up if life gets in the way. The jam is named for its sibling jam, the 12 Days of Sketchmas Game Jam, which runs over the winter holidays!
Hey, we're running another 12 Days* of Sketchoween Game Jam! Running from 10/10 to 27/10 come hang out and make small games for Halloween! itch.io/jam/12-days-...

Had a great dress rehearsal for PACT at a local game convention.
I will say I have the first of three rounds of this game DOWN. Now I just have to make sure the last two rounds are as widely enjoyed.
We also have a video of a complete "Basic" game where players are assigned regional cards and place dominoes to plan out the city renovation. We are looking for a more thematic name for this mode. If you have any suggestions let us know! youtube.com/shorts/MoCTc...
If you're interested how Domino City plays, we made a short 50 second video of a 2 player game. This is the "Free Market" mode where players claim regions and place dominoes to plan out the city renovation. youtube.com/shorts/JcWUf...
Had yet another great weekend at @protospielo.bsky.social this weekend. Got to play loads of really cool prototypes and meet many cool designers and playtesters!

Yay! Thanks so much! π
Personally, I *will* be backing Domino City when the time comes. This game scratches all of my particular itches.

The latest Drentsoft Games newsletter is out! In which I document thoughts about making a multi-layer board for different game modes in Domino City. If you liked reading it consider signing up to get the next issue direct! mailchi.mp/dd16cd966ee2... #boardgamedesigner #abstractgame #boardgames
Thus the idea for the 3 layer design.
I would like to keep the game small-box sized which limits the board size a bit. To keep the symbols and the indents I would have to place them in the indents, making them small and hard to see unless right above the board or I could remove the indents & have the cubes float on the board surface.
The idea is that the basic mode is a lighter play for younger kids or less experienced players, with less determinism and some guessing. The Free Market mode is the meatier version of the game with more choices to make.
Domino City now has 2 game modes. The basic mode uses cards to assign players their regions. The other mode allows them to place cubes to claim regions. I'm trying to work out the best option for a board that suits both modes & I've made a short video on my thoughts. youtube.com/shorts/YCCf4... π²βοΈ
