How good is the conduit function of the aorta?
Here we propose a momentum-based metric allows for a non-invasive and robust characterization of inefficiencies with distinctive spatial and amplitude precision.

π π King's Outstanding Thesis Prize winner! π π
Won after his hard PhD work to better understand the coarctation of the aorta, delivering insights to better predict its onset before babies are born, and providing a research prototype being tested in the clinic!
At the #ESCCongress 2025, Prof. @pablolamata.bsky.social (@kingscollegelondon.bsky.social) shared his vision of how computational models and #digitaltwins can transform procedure planning. Video-interview with PD Dr. Philipp Breitbart

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) causes more than 1/4 of UK deaths. Continued support for research is critical to saving more lives. That's why I joined over 60 @TheBHF funded-researchers in writing to the Government urging them to prioritise CVD in the Life Sciences Plan www.bhf.org.uk/what-we-do/n...
made felt warmly welcomed by Prof. Constantin Coussios and Katherine Baysan - thanks a lot!
took the chance to thank key collaborators in my career, as David Nordsletten or Steven Niederer (impossible to list all, better attempt in my Inaugural lecture at King's, media.kcl.ac.uk/embed/secure...)

Beautiful example of the ability of #DigitalTwins to infer hidden biomarkers, and of the new possibilities when done at scale.
π Huge congratulations to Shuang Qian, lead author and soul behind this work.
How to measure what we cannot observe?
By model fitting
We have studied 1000's subjects from @ukbiobank.bsky.social and learned how electrical conduction velocity and cellular parameters are affected by sex, aging or obesity, and explain why these factors are linked to a higher cardiac risks.
This is a value that won't shine in University rankings, but a value that funding bodies such as @wellcometrust.bsky.social or @royalsociety.org are strongly encouraging us to grow.
Cheers for a strong international growth at this front!
@kings-bmeis.bsky.social is the best place in the world I know in terms of a multi-disciplinary, multi-cultural, inclusive, open and collaborative research culture.
The multi-disciplinary fun. One of the ingredients that I like the most of my job.
Yesterday I disguised myself as a real doctor and witnessed the incredible orchestration that happens in the EP lab, this time led by Sandra Howell and Aldo Rinaldi
