New paper on Actias isabellae, focusing on its Alpine subspecies (galliaegloria).
Using genomics (RADseq) and ecological niche modelling, we found:
🧬 Extremely low genetic diversity and signs of inbreeding
🌡️ A major projected loss of suitable habitat by 2050

Are Entomologists as Endangered as the Insects They Study? All life depends on insects. As many species decline and others—including disease carriers—relocate, the entomologists who study them are becoming endangered.

I’ve now personally heard of 22 colleagues taking DeRP in the USDA. These roles are irreplaceable. You can't train and hire expertise in these taxa overnight. We can't rehire what no longer exists in the US and undo this.
