Imho the calling out of notions that defy essential christian teaching is a thing got caught up in empire, but not inherently so. That said, it still gets co-opted in power moves (inter-ecclesial or interpersonal), begging the question by what authority and process such a thing is decided.

As far as the church goes, this is an apt reflection of Canada's broadly Bonhoefferian approach to the secular in contrast to America's broadly Kuyperian approach.
Oh wow - I've never seen a poll that so aptly reflected the difference between Canadian church and American church postures toward the secular. (Which, like you say, we stand to lose sight of as we absorb american evangelucalism's culture war approach)
Ya I see that text - in context - as something of Barth's wariness of opposition via moderate tones and compromose - perhaps akin to MLK calling out white moderates from jail. Not that escalated rhetoric is always excusable, but KB seems less nasty to me than he once did.

Agreed - and yet it's been interesting to read into that era and see how much Brunner was in the right over-against Althaus & Elert's nazifiable theology, but, compared to KB, did so from a more moderate position that had a more popular appeal. Barth's Nein was the Nein of an ally.
