But for Gale’s, all I can come up with is daydreaming about interacting with friends’ Korps characters—and I’m not confident enough to ask anybody for permission to actually write such scenes.

"Don't you love your grandfather who was in the military?" Of course I love my grandfather. Good luck speaking nuance about the military after nearly a century of our disproportionate involvement in it. Every new war like these that are starting stands to tear our communities apart even further.
When everything and everyone around you is pointing to the military being an honorable path to follow, the fact that wars are imperialistic and not resembling any sort of war our people would have pursued pre-colonization is damned. It's impossible to escape. You're pit up against loved ones too.
The military has usurped a lot of our cultural values where being in the military is, in a warped sense, seen as something honorable to our own culture. The narrative of both "protecting freedoms" and "continuing the legacy of your warrior people" has been a massive success for the military.
After multiple generations of heavy American Indian participation in the military, it is heavily ingrained in daily life of Native communities. Even as I type this I have to tread carefully on what words I use, because military and veteran veneration is extremely prominent and is something embraced.
The military and the American Indian community have a very deep relationship & it is as complex as it is deep. American Indians serve in the military at a much higher rate per capita & it is not just because of the extreme poverty, though that is a contributing factor as well.
This potential draft is going to disproportionately affect American Indians, & AGAIN we are the community no one talks about when new policy like this gets tossed around. Once again, OUR communities are going to get torn apart by this. It is going to be hardest for us to fight back against.
H.R. 7661 would harm so many publishers, authors, and readers. Only the smallest sliver of human experience would make it onto shelves. If you think kids deserve the world, you are against this bill - please read this article and call your reps.
