Did women do philosophy in the Middle Ages? When we think of the periods in European history when women were able to do philosophy, the Middle Ages may hardly come to mind as providing favourable conditions for this activity.

Upcoming online talk about women philosophers in the middle ages:

Jonathan has also just published a fascinating article in the BJHP @thebshp.bsky.social on what's at stake for global approaches to the history of philosophy, available open access here: www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....

If you're interested in more… stay tuned for our forthcoming OUP sourcebook! This volume will include new archival materials, as well as translations of relevant secondary scholarship in Amharic, German, Latin, and Russian contributed by colleagues in Ethiopia, France, Germany, and the UK.

Against this received view and using previously unknown archival evidence, we demonstrate that the authorship dispute actually began in 1857–58, after the text was intriguingly described as a β€œtrue Lucretius of Ethiopian literature” in a Vatican report.

The scholarly consensus until now was that the first person to suspect Giusto of forging the text was Carlo Conti Rossini, an Italian orientalist and former colonial administrator of Italian Eritrea, who first raised his doubts about the text’s authorship in 1916.

We demonstrate that the text’s presumed discoverer, the nineteenth-century Italian missionary Giusto da Urbino, was suspected of forging the text half a century earlier than previously thought.
