Gold Rush San Francisco had a protein problem. The solution? Seabird eggs. If you were an egg in the city back then, odds are you were a common murre egg from the Farallonesβ€”harvested by the hundreds of thousands. A strange Bay Area history, with a Marin park and one mysterious egg at its heart. πŸ₯šπŸŒŠ

Y’all have been so sweet about my website errors recently, please enjoy 10% off all paper originals through 3/21!

I don’t normally discount originals but I just feel awful about the website hiding them from you. Thank you all!

It's exciting to see snippets of #SurvivingEarth coming out from #ImpossiblePictures (www.instagram.com/picturesimpo...). One of the clips features #Arctodus, the #ShortFacedBear, here's my design sheet, which was used by the production team.

#EQHistory: 3/10/1933 M6.4 Long Beach. This EQ destroyed several school buildings. Had it struck during school hours, the death toll would have been far higher. Just 30 days later, California passed the Field Act β€” one of the first US laws mandating seismic building standards. buff.ly/cKH6m49

People where I live have admitted to hitting flex posts on purpose to make cycle lanes accessible to cars and to discourage cycling. If they can do that without fear of consequence (neither damage to their vehicle nor social, other financial or legal consequences), flex posts aren't up to the job.

Happy International Women's Day πŸ’

Did you know, for every 7 men in palaeontology, there are ~3 women. Women make up 25-35% of global vertebrate palaeontological publishing output. And are most likely to study mammals, while men, reptiles.

🧡A scientific cold case for #FossilFriday

For decades, mysterious holes in fossil ammonite shells were attributed to mosasaur bites.

But what if the real culprit was even more terrifying...

Let me tell you about one of these little debates that makes palaeontology so coolπŸ‘‡

What can you do with all the sensors on your smartwatch? Here are some ideas to get you started.

- Build a Wave Buoy
- Measure Tidal Inundation
- Deploy as a stream gauge
- Classify road quality while bicycling

🚨 New paper! 🚨
We now have a unified and comprehensive classification framework for seafloor #geomorphology, which will, with a bit of luck, get us all naming things the same way.
Major step forwards to be able to study the ocean's floor consistently. 🌊πŸ§ͺ
