As for connections, they get you the interview, but you still have to pass the interview.

A lot of the time, connections gave me opportunities that do not match what I'm looking for or can do and I leave soon after. The only time connections have helped me is for recruiting people for my projects.

I think people overestimate the luck part in "getting big". I mean, it does play a role, but you also have to be the one creating stuff your audience wants and having a regime to perfect your skills. Most of the time, there's no shortcut for hardwork.

Yeah, the best advise when starting out or to improve is to copy copy copy. As long as you clearly state you are copying and don't charge money for it, artists will understand.

One thing that I think may help is to have someone you trust summarize the chatter online to you. It helps save you time while also relieving the stress of reading a lot of the stuff. I've done it for friends before and it helps them.
