This is an absolutely huge jump in oil prices.

It's also why Europe needs to get off fossil fuels asap (beyond climate change impact). We can't be beholden to this.

Cor, sure would feel great right now if we were self-sufficient in renewable energy, and laughing at all the rubes reliant on global oil supplies. We'd have a bit of a swagger in our step today.

Dinner: carrot and orange salad with raisins, cranberries and pecans in a lemon honey dressing. Mangetout and green bean salad with toasted hazelnuts in a sesame and olive oil dressing. Leftovers from last night. Posted becase I thought you might like to look at something orange that isn't a cunt.

Kuenssberg: it's impossible to report freely and fairly from inside Iran.

What's your excuse for not doing so in the UK, Laura?

The people who told us austerity was crucial, Brexit would be brilliant, Boris Johnson’s amazing and Liz Truss is an economic genius, are now insisting the country should join an illegal war

Grelief A reflection on loss, family and an unexpected hard reset.

Today’s Bearly Politics post contains barely any politics.

Instead it’s a more personal reflection on the past two weeks - loss, family, grief, relief and a very strange emotional reset.

β€œGrelief.”

Thank you for everyone’s support.

Petrol forecourts 'profiteering' as fuel prices jump nearly 9p a litre Lib Dems urge watchdogs to warn fuel giants that they could be on the hook for hefty fines 'if they are found to be ripping off consumers'

Petrol forecourts 'profiteering' as fuel prices jump nearly 9p a litre.

Opportunistic profiteering

Companies quick to increase prices, slow to bring them down.

Govt must act. Also clawback excess profits through windfall taxes.

I propose a new law:

Anyone who expresses support for an offensive war shall immediately be drafted to fight in it. No exceptions and no exemptions for any reason, including disability or service as a government official in any office. Presidents and congressmen shall fight in any war they start.

Benefits in kind should also be taken into account.

If an MP is living in some donors multimillion pound mansion, or having huge security bills paid for, or having private jets paid for.

It all counts and it is all used to buy influence. It should be banned.

We can't have any external influence on elected and salaried leaders in any shape or form.

If the salary for the job is not enough for them, then don't apply.

MPs’ basic salary to rise to Β£110,000 by end of parliament, watchdog says Ipsa cites rising abuse and constituency workloads as reasons for above-inflation increase of 5% from April

MPs’ basic salary to rise to Β£110,000 by end of parliament, watchdog says.

This should be accompanied by a total ban on second jobs, which in most cases is a corporate bribe. Must end all conflict of interests.

Being a MP is a full time job. MPs must act exclusively as MPs.

The Green victory in Gorton and Denton is important because it adds to the pressure for Labour to stop trying to ape Reform. That needs to happen, because to avoid a right wing populist government, socially liberal voters need to be prepared to vote tactically between Labour and other socially liberal parties in a way that is at least as efficient as tactical voting between Conservatives and Reform. As long as Labour acts and sounds like Reform on social issues, that is just not going to happen. But equally the anti-right wing vote needs a strong Labour vote, because it is highly unlikely that socially liberal parties can defeat the right without it. [3]

The bottom line….
Please god listen, Labour.
For all our sakes you must genuinely rethink and reset. Stop gaming your moves through the nasty prism of the rightwing media and speak to your core voters instead. They can come back but only if they believe in you again.

The irony that a draft dodger with imaginary bone spurs is proclaiming that sending other people sons and lovers to the Epstein War to fight his battles is noble...

Well said Chris Bryant!
I think any further investigation should include who else covered up his poor behaviour? The Queen, RF, his security, senior civil servants? Clearly many people knew that he was utterly unfit!😑
The RF may wish to think this scandal is nearly over, but it’s only got started!😠
