Does it? Or is it that the body of knowledge, that some wrongly feel constitutes science, keeps on increasing? And our scientific models keep changing (which is part and parcel of what science is/does)?

Does science β€˜explain’ mass or charge? Surely we keep on doing the science as happy materialists, learning more about brain function and how this maps on to our view of how we work in the world and, as Anil Seth seems to suggest, one day we’ll look up and realise the hard problem has withered away.

Great book. I’ve been awaiting a follow up - any chance?

I am trying to avoid the labels β€˜left’ and β€˜right’ and, instead, talk about behaviours and values. It helps to keep me sane, anyway!

I was impressed while in Chile a few years ago when they were considering constitutional change that, a) they were doing so and, b) there were ordinary people on street corners handing out pamphlets encouraging reflection about the underpinning values of any new constitution.

Suggests several interesting questions.
What is the best mechanism to transfer wisdom down the generations?
As context falls away how does a piece of wisdom maintain its significance?
Would any repository of accumulated wisdom simply be a natural target?
I think we need a symposium on this!

Russell summed it up: β€˜The man (sic) who has no tincture of philosophy goes through life imprisoned in the prejudices derived from common sense.’

Why do so many posts on Threads seem to be simple engagement baiting? Is there some sort of potential monetary advantage in doing this?

Only got round to reading this in the last few years, inexplicably. Loved it!

Memorable read. But unremittingly depressing.

Feel like I’ve walked out of one party where I was beginning to feel very uncomfortable into another where I don’t know anyone. Yet…

But how do I get over the fact that I only give books that matter to me as presents now, then I am upset when they aren’t read?
