Kathleen - what does this mean for open research? thinking about relationships is also thinking like a business - this is not a bad thing. Sustainability is a systemic issue - consider how to reconfigure (or end) relationships #ORW2026
Kathleen - positioning relationships involved working out how to work with people, competition, collaboration or coopetition? Working with competitors to develop standards. Partnership with other providers helps to ensure researchers don't select proprietory platforms #ORW2026
Kathleen - different types of relationships are needed to support and sustain open infrastructure: reinforcing relationships with publishers, forging relationships with institutions and positioning relationships with infrastructures (e.g. other services like institutional or subject repos) #ORW2026
Kathleen - Sustaining services like Dryad datadryad.org requires reconfiguring relationships and funding/business models #ORW2026
Kathleen - Open infrastructures are not as stable as we may think and they are not free to operate investinopen.org/data-room/st... #ORW2026
Kathleen - could we think of ways to encourage future relationships with data, need flexibility and diversity in data sharing, so not one size fits all. Talk about responsibility and care rather than "management" of data #ORW2026
Kathleen - tensions with usability of data and systems and the reality of transient academic contracts. Concern about letting data our of their care #ORW2026
Kathleen - care for their data by caring for the maintenance and infrastructure that stores the data #ORW2026
Kathleen - their care for the research participants and want their data to accurately reflect their partipants contributed. #ORW2026
Kathleen - data work is emotion work - feelings of guilt, shame, vulnerability which came from tensions with personal visibility but emotions are not a bug but a feature - they are taking it seriously and taking responsbility for their data #ORW2026
Kathleen - it gave deep insights into local practices - looked at why data sharing might not happen within this group. Looked at how we build relationships with our data that changes over the course of the research processes #ORW2026
Kathleen - research culture is a big topic but the focus here is local - example of Autoethnography of data practices with a group of researchers - anaylsed their own research practices publicera.kb.se/ir/article/v... #ORW2026
Kathleen - a relational view provides insight into how to progress open research - epistemic diversity and funding models and from local to systemic concerns #ORW2026
Kathleen - relational persepectives foregrounds context, practices and diversity. Not just about putting content online. It is a matter of considered relationships #ORW2026
Kathleen - a more relational perspective of openness starts with consideration of inclusion - how can we make research more inclusive, more just? It's relational, social, diverse, situation, equitable, focussed on processes rather than objects #ORW2026
Kathleen - traditional perspective to openness as sharing objects, articles, data, code etc - tends to be thought of as being unlimited (immediate), digital with good outcomes - this has a directional orientation - tranparency then concern about quality and focus on inclusion #ORW2026
Kathleen - there are sociotechnical challenges, local contexts within broader systems and relational way of thinking about open research all come into play #ORW2026
Kathleen - there are still points of friction - disciplinary and epistemic diversity, unequal access to tools, assessment cultures, funding models, sustainability and resilience, knowledge security and AI concerns #ORW2026
Kathleen - there has been broader progess in terms of the increase in available open content, development of local and international policies and changes in researchers' attitude #ORW2026
Helen - not enough to open up our research but we need to be open - open to other methodologies, other processes - changing research culture is paramount #ORW2026
Helen - its important to articulate our art and our practice research to the wider community #ORW2026
