I see that a lot when it comes to NYT covering things like trans issues. It's not necessarily that anything is outright false (though, sometimes there is...). It's more about decisions about who gets interviewed for stories, whose stories get lifted up, how it gets framed, the language used, etc.

We need reparations for ICE victims.

Anything short of that is setting the stage for a massive wealth grab from people of color that will re-entrench racial disparities for generations.

This might be controversial but even the braindead use case of AI as a parlor trick for you and your erudite friends to hyuck and gee whiz over in between doing the Wordle and overnighting dongles on Amazon is miserable and corrosive to your humanity

the US tax burden is not too high. our problem is our safety net is shit. handing individuals a little more cash can't solve problems like skyrocketing healthcare costs, housing crisis, no childcare, vaccine refusal. 1

Yes everything is terrible but let’s not lose sight of the fact that someone has written the Headline to End All Headlines.

During the liberation of Dachau and Buchenwald in 1945, many of the camp guards tried to escape by disguising themselves as prisoners or civilians. Newly liberated prisoners recognized several guards immediately, and you can imagine how that ended for them.

And they're still grabbing people off the street and building concentration camps and there seems to be some kind of a child sex-trafficking ring coverup at the highest levels of government? Otherwise, though, best of times

I hate that almost every search stopped supporting quotation marks around a word or phrase to match it exactly. There are so many times that I know exactly what I'm looking for but it keeps trying to show me unrelated bullshit. The loss of booleans and advanced filtering is a whole other issue.

The L.A. Music Scene, After the Fires "The worst part is the realization of how long we will be living in the shadow of it."

I interviewed some musicians who lost their homes and instruments in the devastating Eaton Fire and wrote about how they're picking up the pieces. This piece originally ran in ANTICS magazine last year. Now I've made it available via my newsletter:

WTF are we doing with them??? Why are we allowing ourselves to be surveilled by EVERYONE???

A big part of the authoritarian playbook is war. War takes over the news. War blots out criticism. War divides a nation’s people, subjecting those against it to being called unpatriotic. War grants leaders all sorts of emergency powers. War consumes everything else.

We mustn’t let this war do so.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone.

It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children.

The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities.

It is two electric power plants, each serving a town of 60,000 population.

It is two fine, fully equipped hospitals. It is some 50 miles of concrete highway.

We pay for a single fighter plane with a half million bushels of wheat.

We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people.

This, I repeat, is the best way of life to be found on the road. the world has been taking.

This is not a way of life at all, in any true sense. Under the cloud of threatening war, it is humanity hanging from a cross of iron.

Every month the United States provides even more reason to boycott its products and companies β€” the strikes on Iran being just the latest.

In light of that, it’s a great time to ditch the products and services of US tech companies. I made a comprehensive guide to help you.

As of tonight, licenses of trans people across Kansas are being invalidated en masse, enabling the overnight criminalization of an entire group of people for going about our lives. It’s often said you never know when you’re living through history, so let me assure you: that’s what’s happening now.
