relaying a tip from a novelist friend -
whenever you write a fact about your setting, think about what else needs to be true to make that first fact plausible. if there are fish, there's probably water and food sources for those fish. this can trigger a chain reaction of things to write about

just looking at Marathon grosses me out. in the middle of appreciating the art, I remembered they laid off Bungie's veteran art lead who defined the Marathon style

I like Alan Moore's writing tips on BBC Maestro. Ranges from broad to specific, but it all ties together and it's helped me get stuff on paper
Should come up in the top results here: www.youtube.com/results?sear...

ah, yes. when I watch a slapstick gentlemen's duel and one combatant repeatedly scampers up after mortal blows like a Looney Toons character, I cannot help but think, "gee, this is way too serious for me"

sacrificing trans folks for imagined political points is both immoral and ineffective. the former's always been true; the last 2 years of elections have borne out the latter
voters are galvanized by candidates who substantively stand up for the marginalized. it's literally a winning strategy

From there, I can earnestly recommend or not recommend a movie to friends when it comes up in conversations. We've each had the room to mull it over. From there, it's easier to have a discussion and gain new appreciation, while it's less likely to trigger a silly and futile competition about taste

More earnestly, I love leaving a theater and having the time, space, and quiet to process what I just saw. Did I love it? If so, what did I love about it? If not, what bugged me? I can do this on the way home without someone hearing me say "I liked it" and responding "Actually, you're wrong"

Solo trips to the movie theater are a treat for many reasons, not the least of which: I don't find out who among the friends I love are the kinds of assholes who talk and text during the movie

as a kid, I slept like a rock through thunderstorms. I miss it so much
