2/3 @davidpocock.bsky.social said it well in a video, stating something along the lines of: A bricklayer doesn't get his bricks for free. But the gas companies are essentially getting their gas for free. The bricklayer pays his business tax but also has to buy his resources. While gas companies...
Vote today in the Senate showed that @davidpocock.bsky.social, @greens.org.au and Pauline Hanson were for the 25% tax on Australia's gas exports, while @australianlabour.bsky.social and @albomp.bsky.social are not interested. It's absolutely crazy! 1/3

Photo of Anthony Albanese in the House of Representatives NEW EPISODE | FFS: fossil fuel subsidies cost Australia $30,000 a minute Listen to Dollars & Sense now via the link or wherever you get your podcasts.
Youβre meant to tax things you want less of & subsidise things you want more of.
Yet Australian governments are handing out $16.3 billion in subsidies for fossil fuels.
@mattgrudnoff.bsky.social & @elinorjohnstonleek.bsky.social discuss why on this episode of Dollars & Sense.

Petrol & gas prices in Australia. It's crazy that the gas we own is sold at international prices to us. Whoever negotiated the deal(s) with gas companies was not looking after Australians.

Finding the right balance between work & time off. Productivity is benefited by rest & leisure. If only Keynes prediction of 15-hour workweeks by 2030 were feeling within reach. That's what could happen if we more fairly distributed productivity gains over the past 45 years.
2/2 This drives a greater need for a dynamic economy with resilience & building country wealth while we can by collecting more from our resources that we sell.
How will AI potentially change the future of work? Replacing many jobs will have an economic & inevitably a social impact. Is π¦πΊ ready? 1/2 #economics #ai @nytopinion.nytimes.com @jimchalmers.bsky.social @davidpocock.bsky.social

What would happen to the US and the wider global economy if Taiwan could no longer export its chips?
Unemployment. What is it? How is it measured? Knowing the answers will help understand this hugely important piece of macroeconomic data. Many decisions are based on our understanding of unemployment. #economics #macroeconomicobjectives #discouragedworkers @theconversation.com
The right to protest is critical for a healthy democracy, especially when wealthy special interests can have an outsized voice through financial support of politicians. π¦πΊ needs to maintain protections around protest. @theconversation.com #democracy #protest
Some marketing, psychology, and behavioural economics. This article has it all! How do you get "tricked" into spending more when online shopping. Understand what's behind it.
Wow. Just wow. It makes me think of what education technology has also done. Not for children but for profits. #marketing #economics
As if we needed more reason to not use X (formerly Twitter). The algorithms have lasting impacts even after we "turn them off". Watch out for yourself and disconnect when possible and always critique what you're looking at and who it's from. @theconversation.com
2/2 Arguably this is what Australians have experienced from Coles and Woolworths. Market power and a lack of competition leads to inflationary pressure, which is fixed via fiscal policy and maintaining market competition (keeping big businesses from being able to abuse their monopolistic positions).
Good article about inflation but maybe too simple. Another cause of inflation that would be beneficial for the lay person to understand is profit-push inflation or price-making power by businesses that are so large or maintain monopolistic market power. #economics #inflation @theconversation.com 1/2
Objective data showing how migrants are NOT the cause for housing prices increasing by so much. Data. Positive economics. Critical thinking. #economics @australiainstitute.org.au
Great summary of the recent research into housing π¦πΊ. Australian housing ranks as some of the most unaffordable in the world. Something needs to change & it's not just supply. People respond to incentives. CGT & negative gearing are huge incentives for investors. #economics @jimchalmers.bsky.social
2/2 Real wages for middle Australians is way down over the past 4 years. These rises pummel those struggling the most while rewarding those who are financially secure. Is this what Australia is about? What happened to a fair go?
The needed fix is not an interest rate rise. It's a government brave enough to do what's right by more Australians. 1/3 of Australians who own their home & have money in the bank love interest rate rises & spend more. A third & the wealthiest third. 1/2 @theconversation.com #economics #fiscalpolicy

Inflation for 2025 is in at 3.8%, increasing from the previous month. RBA is now considering a rate increase. Who do these corrective measures hurt the most? Is this the best method to improve inflation? We can do better π¦πΊ. Tax those that aren't hurting. #inflation #equity @jimchalmers.bsky.social
More free trade between countries. Are we seeing a realignment with the US being left to itself?
Community wealth building as a legal requirement. I will be reading and learning more about this.

Externalities no longer calculated at the EPA. Industry over people. But only certain people will suffer and they arenβt friends with Trump or βhis peopleβ. I wonder how many will suffer who also voted for this administration.
