To Cut Housing Costs, Some States Are Easing Fire Safety Rules
pretty incredible to wake up and find myself and @stephenjacobsmith.com in the @nytimes.com talking about better and more cost effective housing with point access blocks (single stair apartment buildings)

Missing in the middle of WA's middle housing: Elevators
A bill still in play in the Washington Legislature would make elevators easier and less expensive to install in "middle housing" developments.
βWhen I was apartment-hunting, the only elevator-accessible choices were giant apartment complexes or high-rises β options that came with high rents. Thatβs a deal-breaker when you consider that people with disabilities are twice as likely to live in poverty.β www.seattletimes.com/opinion/miss...

Thereβs still a lot in this bill thatβs great (smaller elevators for smaller buildings, technical advisory group reconsideration of a few cost-increasing requirements with very questionable benefits), but this is a bummer. If we defer to elevator industry interests, thereβs only so much we can do

The $115 million in estimated tax revenue for SSHD is just that β an estimate. We should have a more precise estimate of how much the social housing payroll tax is bringing in for housing by the end of the month. The 5% tax on pay above $1 million is paid by employers, not employees.

elevators are transit!
also - be sure to email your WA electeds on the house housing committee today to vote down peterson's poison pill that would eliminate the most important part toward cheaper elevators (standards harmonization)
