Why do people watch the same video or read the same post and disagree on what they saw or read? We presume our own interpretation is the obvious and correct one. But undetected misinterpretations may be a factor online and could even warp perceived consensus. New research:

The Language Processing Lab at the University of Arkansas is recruiting a PhD student to start in the fall of 2026. Our lab examines the basic cognitive processes involved in understanding written text, mostly fiction while being read by skilled adult readers, with an emphasis on reference comprehension, inferences, and negation, among other topics. We use multiple behavioral methods, including priming tasks, reaction time, self-paced reading, and eye-tracking. The University of Arkansas PhD program has a growing group of cognitive psychologists, with several labs in the department investigating memory, creativity, and other aspects of cognition. Funding is through teaching and research assistantships. The university also has generous fellowships available for competitive applicants.
My lab is recruiting PhD students for fall 2026. Please reach out if interested!

ST&D is only partially fueled by our fervor for research. We're at our best when we fuse scholarship with community and foster memories that last a lifetime.
Indeed, we are a bundle of smiling socialites :) Look no further than these shots from ST&D 2025 for proof! 🧵1/5
Our latest issue of DP is a special issue in honor of Russell Tomlin, a research pioneer who bridged a foundational gap between theoretical linguistics and cognitive psychology. This issue was guest edited by Andriy Myachykov and Christoph Scheepers.
The deadline to submit to this special issue has been EXTENDED to September 30. If you attended ST&D 2025, consider submitting your work to this Special ST&D 2025 Issue of Discourse Processes!

Here's another spotlight of a mere handful of the wonderful presentations we were privy to in Padua this year :) Major thanks to the University of Padua for providing the space and time for our meeting to carry out fruitfully! #textdiscourse2025
Thanks to Taylor & Francis, we are pleased to provide Free Access (through October) to the recent article by Walter Kintsch, "A history of psychology as it happened to me", published posthumously in the recent 2024 ST&D Conference special issue of Discourse Processes.
New in Public Opinion Quarterly: Live video can change how people feel about answering sensitive questions—but not in the same way for everyone. Example: For some, seeing and being seen can make them MORE at ease, for others LESS at ease.
For a terrific conversation on emotion, mind & brain, thank you to The Aspen Institute! www.youtube.com/watch?v=NM6f...
New paper with @ivabra.bsky.social and Helge Strømsø, where we test a learning scenario in which an informative text is combined with an ambigous graph. A call to increase students' complex literacy skills!

It's actually crazy that AI was just unleashed onto the world for (mostly) free and without any, like, training before using it. The amount of AI-induced psychosis reports I've been seeing lately are really disconcerting, and I was already wary of AIs impact on social psychology...
We would like to recognize Kate Cain (member), Michael Wolfe (member), and Joe Magliano (chair) for their service on the Governing Board. They see to it that the Society for Text & Discourse runs effectively. We would also like to welcome Pani Kendeou as the incoming chair of the Governing Board!
🎓 Excited to share our review paper on Generative AI and Misinformation in Education! 🤖📚

Do readers of social media interpret posts the way authors intended?
We asked authors what stance they intended to convey in a post they tweeted about Roe v. Wade.

We want to thank all of our attendees and presenters for making the 35th Annual Conference for the Society of Text & Discourse rich with research, collaboration, and community! Here are just a handful of the memories that we've created together :)
Mañana 25 junio a las 15.00 (Chile) o 21.00 (España) hablaré sobre la efectividad de las prácticas para fomentar la lectura digital en los centros educativos, a partir de nuestra investigación con bases de datos internacionales. ¡Os esperamos!
