Why do you think WEBP didn't instantly become the standard format upon its inception, that's right because no software supported it at the time

That's why it's gotten a decade to work in literally every piece of software that's currently maintained

I can't think of a single thing that's broken now

If anything WEBP is really good for old tech due to less drive space taken for better image quality
As someone who once only had 16GB to work with on a laptop I think I'd be very pleased with WEBP

You can use WEBP on Windows 2000 machines

Also nobody took away JPEG indefinitely, you can set up a daemon to automatically convert WEBP to JPEG if you want
