@maxfg98.bsky.social you are absolutely right! Adult learners also have a responsibility to participate in their educational experience. @mcmastersurgery uses an “educational checklist” that facilitates exactly this on a daily basis
@jenahall.bsky.social says self determination theory allows for empowered learners that take ownership of their journey. Experienced clinicians demonstrating how they manage uncertainty and continue to learn, having epistemic humility, will go a long way.

Much ‘curricula’ in residency programs is guided by the affordances of the clinical learning environment and tends to be somewhat opportunistic. Is it time to have conversations about some deliberate design strategies around teaching around fostering things like productive struggle? #ICRE2025
As a surgical trainee, you WANT to deal with all the uncertainty, the challenging cases, the struggle. Psychological safety comes from staff trusting that you have the ability to learn from mistakes, and from trainees trusting that staff are there to help them reach their learning goals
Is psychological safety all “warm and fuzzy”? Or have we as a group become afraid of uncertainty and failure…? “There is a really big difference between discomfort and distress” says Mylopoulos.
