Applications are due April 1st and there are still a few spaces left; we want to fill them with committed writers working on important projects. Is this you, or one of your friends, or colleagues, or students? Spread the word !

Storyboard is the space I wish I'd had when writing my first book (and second... and even third.) The residency will involve craft talks, generative workshops, focused time to write, as well as time to connect and co-conspire with fellow artists & thinkers & cultural agitators.
Last year, our first, Storyboard welcomed historical fiction writers, journalists working on their first books, academics hoping to turn their dissertations into works for the wider public, memoirists wanting to deepen their texts with research, and more. www.stmarys-ca.edu/storyboard-r...
We created Storyboard for writers working in any genre on what we think of as fact based creative projects––that is, projects in which research, language, art and fact co-mingle to reckon with the urgent concerns of the world as it is, was, or will be. (More on that here: lithub.com/truth-power-...
Just a few more weeks to apply to Storyboard, a week-long writers residency in Moraga, CA this June. The animating ethic behind the Storyboard Residency is that writing, however feeble the written word can feel at times, is indeed of great social purpose.

In the new issue of The Believer, I write about political cult leader and prototype for Q-Anon-level conspiracies, Lyndon LaRouche -- and my dad's many tangles with him in the court of law.
The Believer is doing such good work these days, and I'm honored to be a part of it. Subscribe! Support!
I've been beating this drum for years. But i no longer need to do much to convince ppl here at home. We’ve all seen it with our own eyes now: the lengths authoritarian leaders will go to criminalize -- or even kill -- anyone who tries to undermine their campaigns of violence.
anti-immigrant political campaigns aren't just tools to win votes; this rhetoric helps build the foundations of full authoritarian control. When the state legally and physically goes after immigrant defenders, it is clear that no one is safe
Last year, I wrote about Tommy Olsen of the Aegean Boat Report -- an organization that tracks illegal refugee pushbacks by the Greek authorities-- and Greece's campaign to cast him as a criminal for his watchdog work. They've now issued a warrant for his arrest.

The second issue of The Approach, a new print-only newspaper full of heavy-hitting Bay Area bylines, is out today.
Our biz reporter @cydhayes.bsky.social chatted with editor @laurenmarkham.bsky.social to get the details:
"How quickly a state of careless ease becomes one of mortal peril. Enter the future."

I’ve had the opportunity to interview fabulous executives, nonprofit leaders, and writers over the years. I’m always impressed when @billmckibben.bsky.social speaks about our fragile earth and solar energy. @laurenmarkham.bsky.social did an excellent job moderating tonight’s talk in #SanFrancisco!
Thank you for coming! 🧡
Civil liberties advocates have warned about this for years: an ICE agent used data about remittances to Mexico to track down an immigrant, solely on a charge of unauthorized reentry — not money laundering or any other crime often used to justify such surveillance theintercept.com/2025/08/21/i...
This is part of the greater war on education and expertise that’s ongoing. A professional class of law enforcement is anathema to the people in power who want blunt weapons with which to beat the undesirables, not people who can think, and question, and refuse.
Michael sits down with journalist @laurenmarkham.bsky.social to unpack her fascinating piece in The Guardian on Italian towns offering homes for €1. Are Americans falling for a fantasy, or is the life swap dream real?

The old ways are still in use. Here, an olive grower picks the fruiting crop from the trees, then gathers them from her net into a bucket, preparing to screen them and remove any leaves, twigs or dirt. Image by Myrto Papadopoulos. Greece, 2025.
Olive farmers are noticing the effects climate change is having on their harvest, and many foresee a struggling future.
Grantee @laurenmarkham.bsky.social traveled to #Greece to find out how rising temperatures are affecting these ancient crops.
