Owl be damned: regulator stops short of rat poison ban
Conservationists are pushing for a regulator to outlaw a common class of rodenticides having pervasive effects on owls...
Why are our owls dying?? Itβs all about which rat bait that you, your neighbours, your council, and pest controllers are using.

If youβre wondering why owls and Tawny Frogmouths are dying, have a read. Your dog or cat might be next if we donβt speak up and hold the regulator to account. I wrote this article w/ Dr Holly Parsons.

Calls for change as controversial product found in iconic Aussie spot: 'Unacceptable risk'
It's feared they could be having a toxic effect around the surrounding area.
Just out: new information reveals that Australian Parliament House uses long-lasting, harmful rat poisons (SGARs) that are killing owls, eagles, quolls, and Tawny Frogmouths π³π‘. I give expert comment for this @yahoonews.com article about it: au.news.yahoo.com/calls-for-ch... @birdlifeoz.bsky.social

Thank you. 3 immediate neighbours have made a 3D garden bed thatβs not lawn, 1 of which is about 30% locally-native. And a 4th neighbour up the rd has 1/2 the front Australian natives. So getting there! Maybe start small (eg a native bed) and expand as they get used to the idea and hear why u did it

great question. The trouble is, this differs depending on where you r in Oz, as different locally native plants exist in different places. But things w/ large root mass. I know grass trees have huge root balls and grow well on slopes. @birdlifeoz.bsky.social has a free habitat gardening course too!

Thanks! The more people that make habitat gardens, the less out of place they will seem, and the better off all our wildlife in our well-being will be :-). Yes, you are correct that it is a C. littoralis, and a X. johnsonii. And yes, skinny pine-like leaves is good to prevent evapotranspiration π

#HabitatGarden plant highlight: Wahlenbergia tumidifructa. An unassuming, perennial herb that bunches in thickets reminiscent of grass, up to 600mm. Itβs native to much of Australia and serves as great erosion control at the bottom edge of my small suburban block south of #Brisbane. #WildOz

Limited research on the topic suggests an β¬οΈ risk of death for relocated snakes. Snakes required for venom r captive & are the same individuals over time. Itβs funnel web spiders that the public r asked to collect for venom extraction, and this is b/c spiders live much shorter lives than snakes.
