There is a sense among a number of people in Montclair (the no/no voters) that the budget has been mishandled for so long that having someone else involved with managing it would be a good thing.

I would say that this was the least expected outcome in town. There is a lot of confusion this morning about how Montclair wound up here. No one seems happy with the result.
And Montclair will likely not get a state monitor now (according to the superintendent).
The Montclair School Referenda, held on March 10 2026, the controversial proposals saw Montclair raise taxes for one year to fix a structural deficit existing in the school system under Q1, while voting against permanent tax raises to fix that deficit under q2.
This is how our government has been corrupted:
1) Donors give huge sums to elect politicians
2) Elected officials rewrite rules in donors' favor
3) Donors make huge profit
4) Repeat
