As the snow melts, the first flowers appear on the sun-warmed rocks. Spring has arrived to the mountains πŸ”οΈπŸŒΌ

🌱 Do plants compete even in Antarctica?

Huisman et al. found the dominant moss Sanionia uncinata grows faster when paired with other mosses, while neighbouring species decline. Even harsh Antarctic environments include strong plant interactions.

Future agricultural policies need to integrate biodiversity targets into smart farming npj Sustainable Agriculture - Smart farming (SF), the use of advanced technologies such as sensors, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and automation, holds...

New paper online today. In it, we advocate for biodiversity in the increasingly modernized agricultural world. Smart farming could be a wonderful tool to alleviate pressure from agro-ecosystems, but, as we argue here, this will only happen if biodiversity becomes an explicit target.

Exposure of western United States bird communities to predicted high severity fire - Nature Communications Changing fire regimes, leading to higher likelihood of high severity fire, are having unknown impacts on biodiversity. This study identifies regions of high avian biodiversity and individual bird spec...

Where will novel fire regimes threaten birds? Our paper in @natcomms.nature.com shows that most bird diversity hotspots facing future high-sev fire occur in places that historically burned at low severity - a critical mismatch. These are the spots to focus restoration.

Turns out: yes - they even sequestered more carbon than resilient forests!

Very emo Sphagnum on site today. Must have heard the rumours of a new my chemical romance album this year and (as I’ve been considering) dyed its hair black like it’s 2008 again. Caused by deposition of organic C and humic acids when peaty water evaporates as far as I know #MireChemicalRomance

Tell me five classes you took in college:

- Sociology
- Classical archeology
- Underwater ecology
- Bat bioacoustics
- Geology and geomorphology

I was fortunate to study at universities that allowed students to individually craft their own curricula with few constraints or mandatory courses
