J: I wanted to honor the women I worked with in Northern Uganda [the survivors of the Lord’s Resistance Army insurgency]. After 20 years of fighting, leaders of international organizations said that the war in Northern Uganda was the most forgotten war in the world, and it really was forgotten.

There are enough hot takes out there about what the movie gets right or wrong about Mormonism and theology and religion. But what it gets very right is how Mormon women are conditioned to be overly nice and respectful even in dangerous situations. 3/3

I know it reflects a fight, flight, freeze, or fawn response. She fawns in an effort to protect herself from danger.

But her Mormon woman voice fawning to the dangerous man? That has been my voice before. 2/3

I finally watched Heretic last night. I found it interesting and not overly gruesome for a horror movie. But there was one scene that made me cry. The missionaries know at this point that they are in serious danger, and Sister Paxton turns and thanks Mr. Reed. 1/3

Her memoir is fascinating, but her life in the decades that follow is wild!

But I'm finding myself shocked by what I'm learning about her life after that time. Deciding she simply didn't like her sons and declaring herself an "unmother" 😱 2/2

Sonia Johnson led Mormons for ERA and was excommunicated by the LDS Church in 1979. I've read her memoir, From Housewife to Heretic, and I knew that shortly after that was published she ran for president of the US in 1984. 1/2
