A misread, I think. If the account was full of blood & gore, then the obvious point would be that death itself was supposed to stir us. But the accounts are remarkably restrained. And there is dialogue. Another goofy move some make is to add the sound of hammering nails, or re-enact women weeping.
Neither of those stories is told in such a way that they are simply vehicles for sentimentalism. But that's the implication of Carols & Readings or simple recitations of the Stations of the Cross.
