Congress rejected massive cuts to US science budgets for 2026, but much of the money still isnβt flowing to researchers.
The culprit? The White House Office of Management and Budget (OMB) is quietly slow-walking the release of funds. π§΅π

Abstract submission just opened for #ISEH2026 in Frankfurt. Outstanding scientific program; welcoming community; and more than double the number of short talk slots for abstract to be presented in. Looking forward to seeing you there. @isehsociety.bsky.social
I think this gets to the heart of things, but the whole thread is worth a read. π
I got the chance to talk to Dr. Jennifer Trowbridge @trowbridgelab.bsky.social about ISEH and how the society supports the hematology community... and what we should be expecting in the year ahead! Have a listen π! @isehsociety.bsky.social

NIH has for decades used a rigorous recruitment process to hire its top scientists, the institute directors.
The Trump NIH is changing that. Theyβve already installed one political hire this way, reportedly a friend of JD Vance.
This post describes the process. Demand the Trump people follow it.
Methodology
NEW: An analysis finds that NIH funding cuts have disrupted at least 383 clinical trials, affecting over 74,000 participants that were enrolled in studies that were testing treatments for conditions including cancer, heart disease and brain disease.
Thanks for all the supportive comments from folks in the chat - it means a lot.
I want to address the comment from the anonymous HHS official.
Is it βradically leftistβ to believe NIH policies should not harm research participants?

Can confirm. I am okay and more motivated than ever to speak up.
Nothing scares this administration more. Their power lies in our silence.

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this yearβs cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

Staff members at the NIH seem to have done the impossible: spend the agency's $48 billion budget.
βEveryone has been rallying together to clean up the mess, but itβs a mess that did not need to be made,β an NIH program officer told me.

According to news reports, NIH is on track to award nearly all of its FY25 budget. Program officersβworking long hours despite staff lossesβmade it possible. Take a moment to thank your PO for their dedication.
Jamie Raskin FTW.
A fun list to inspire.
I really feel this. I received a brand new puzzle. It was a gift, a picture of many beautiful skeins of yarn. When I completed it, there was one missing piece. Right in the center. It felt like the universe was flipping me off. It happened years ago, and it still makes me sad.
I'm hiring a computational biologist interested in complex trait genetics using deep learning approaches. Reach out to me, if interested.
