Take a peek inside my funny fantasy novel "A Baker's Coven."
"Its all a misunderstanding, Troo," said Rinald, stepping out with hands outstretched and palms up. "Honestly, there's no need for any violence." "I hadn't considered that there was," said Troo, folding her arms across her chest. It was like watching a bridge being built, massive structures rising and locking into place with deliberation and controlled effort. She shifted her shoulders and sniffed. 'But now I am."

I feel a bit bad with this answer to #PretendPanel 's prompt. I feel like other writers keep discovering huge things about themselves!

Thinking of what sort of words of encouragement my younger writer self would have wanted when he was stressing about the umpteenth draft or which file type to use.

Yes. I also remember the photo covers of the 1970s with a weird assortment of objects linked to the novel.
I once saw an exhibition in Bath on Penguin book covers.

Melancholy somehow turns up in a lot of my stories Particularly the short stories!

I am not a big fan of many current covers. They often seem to be designed to be eye catching on an ebook store, with huge titles and simple designs. But I love the in depth art that used to be more common!
Taking a cue from George & the Dragons π π and looking at some evocative and beautiful fantasy book cover art.

The First Seat of Whinnia and his advisor started as a take on Theodan and Grima Wormtongue, and then I tweaked their personalities a little based on the sorts of people I've seen really in such roles.

Take a peek inside my new funny fantasy novel "A Baker's Coven"
The woman leaned forward and smiled. It was the sort of expression that should have turn any troublemakers blood to ice. A smile like that is only smiled by two creatures in the world: a shark who has just spotted a swimmer in deep water who is quite alone apart from the tuba player...

My drafting method hasn't changed much since my first published book, but I used to have to draft everything longhand on paper. it took a while.

Looking back at all the wonderful #SpeculativeFiction from Aotearoa New Zealand in 2025, both to vote on what I think was the best for the Sir Julius Vogel awards, and to make a list of awesome things to go read!

A really enjoyable harder scifi novel, with a good voice that barrels along nicely! I enjoyed Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.

Yup, me too!!
Please, never be shy telling an author you loved their books.
Itβs seriously what gets us through.
My multiple times needed were more about not having a lot of reading time than anything else, but it was good!
What sort of things are you going to find in Book One of the Misplaced Kingdoms?
I hope some of this piques your interest!

Had a wonderful time with R. F. Kuang's Babel, although it took me borrowing it from the library four times and waiting while others read it in between. A fascinating world she built, and some really good things to say about solidarity.
