I always wonder, if after the Franco-Prussian War, WW1, WW2 and the extremely militarized Iron Curtain period, how the same doesn't hugely apply to Western Europe.

Most poralities are situational, aren't they? Mine are, anyway. Admittedly, mostly concerned with the situationality of state power. Not to dredgr up ww2 too much, but my greatest heroes broke a bunch of laws, both of state and of common moral ideals, in defense of the (more) innocent.

Well, I think I've considered my viewpoint quite thoroughly. (I'm sorry as you happen to have picked a discussion with an overenthousiastic philosophy major) there's certainly things to say for other viewpoints, but I believe in mine.

But this badness is not in the personal character of the vigilantes. It is the state's faillure to dispense protection and justice through the means at which it excels (laws and non-violent rehabilitative justice) to protect individuals that draws civillians to attempt, often imperfect justice.

Obviously, we have different expectations of judicial actions from states and from individuals. We expect states to dissuade individuals from hurting members of society, using the mechanisms provided by civilized statecraft.

The failure of state mechanisms, the drive towards vigilantism is bad.

I genuinely don't really see the discontinuity. I and many people are critical of the entrenched power, where those who kill with the approval of state and financial power, for greed or for hatred, recieve state support, whereas those who take action to defend themselves and others are criminalized.

I mean, what are the legal repercussions on the trolley problem? Whoever killed Brian Johnson, the United Health CEO, may have known that this act would save many more than lives than it destroyed.
