Look at these charts. TransUnion and Experian, two of the three major credit bureaus, have started dismissing a larger share of consumer complaints without help. The timing coincides with the Trump administration’s dismantling of the CFPB. www.propublica.org/article/cred... @joeljacobs.bsky.social

Oh. I learned about circuit breakers in March 2020, when they were triggered four times. At the time, it hadn’t happened since 1997. www.marketplace.org/story/2020/0...

One of the points analysts make here is that tariff revenue doesn’t come close to replacing the income tax we collect.
I’d add that, over time, tariff revenue is theoretically expected to decline because they’re intended to drive more domestic production of things we’ve offshored.
🤔
Good explainer here.
“Billionaires use borrowed money for living expenses, pledging their shares or other assets as collateral. The interest on the debt is much lower than a capital-gains tax bill would be, and their stock portfolios can continue accumulating gains.”

ICE just bought warehouses for mega-detention centers in MD & AZ and is nearing deals in GA, MO, NY, NJ, FL.

Oh.
The Timberwolves-Warriors game in Minneapolis has been postponed by the NBA, sources tell ESPN, in wake of a man shot and killed Saturday in a confrontation with federal agents in the city. It's the second shooting there in a week, third this month, involving a federal officer.
Excellent story here with rich detail about ICE observers in Minnesota. I recommend reading the whole thing

Oh.
I can't describe how bad Minneapolis feels right now. My neighbors are pulling kids out of school. The public schools are offering remote learning until 2/12. We are having conversations in our alleys about how to protect ourselves. It feels like a military occupation with a blockade.
WSJ investigation: In the past 6 months ICE agents have fired at vehicles 13 times, leading to:
* 8 people shot
* 5 of which were U.S. citizens
* 2 died
* no victims drew a weapon
The playbook: Agents box in a vehicle, block attempts to flee, then fire

An excellent, gripping piece.

My god.
Ok the gaslighting now extends to math, a subject that is actually never subjective.
It’s worth revisiting the 2017 Rob Reiner-directed movie, “Shock and Awe” — particularly this week, as Trump just designated street fentanyl a “weapon of mass destruction.” The movie was about journalists who were skeptical of the George W. Bush administration’s justification for invading Iraq.
