Useful to teach this with broken windows theory, since itโs used to promote community policing.
And for those of us whose work on the prison-industrial complex focuses on the United States, the focus on Canada here shows how antiblackness and the limits of police reform are global.

WELL. FUCKING. DESERVED.
Speaking of which, Avengers Academy deserved another 100 issues.
Was literally one of the greatest things Marvel had published in the last several years.

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste

I think a lot about how Bill Murray's character in Lost in Translation is embarrassed to be doing a commercial and how foreign that response would be today, and that was not so long ago

I think a lot of us who teach have also lost this, for various reasons, from cynicism, to burnout, to some not liking teaching, etc etc. Every semester, I try for this, to instil that joy for learning in my students. Im not sure the world allows for/wants it any more, though. Even if students do.

It was going on one, two in the morning, and we were shooting what I felt was an important scene for me, when he makes an attempt to be quote-unquote straight, in a suit, and at the end of it he gets emotional and locks himself in the other room. And I felt like, Iโm not getting what I wantโIโm not happy with it. Mike was happy with it. He called me the next day and said, โI know you werenโt happy with the scene last night. Believe me, we wouldnโt have gone home if I had felt we werenโt getting it.โ And then he sort of became my psychiatrist and said, โYou find it difficult to be happy, donโt you? You find it difficult to enjoy things.โ And I said, โWell, sometimes. Last night was about feeling too tired and not feeling I was reaching what I needed to reach for the scene.โ He talked to me then about when he was making, I donโt know whether it was Virginia Woolf or The Graduate. He said, โI didnโt enjoy it for a second. I was worried about so many things.โ And then he said, โYou know, this is never going to happen again quite this way. You should try to allow yourself to enjoy this more. Take a minute a day, and then add a minute the next day, and another minute. Pretty soon, youโll have hours of happiness.โ
The Birdcage opened thirty years ago today, so in its honor, I want to share one of my favorite stories about Mike Nichols that didn't make it into my biography. This is from an interview I did with Nathan Lane.
