Castles, International Women and Fru Fru - My Writing Week
This week I've been making good progress writing my next historical saga, The Bakery Girls. It's taking a lot out of me, and will do until I finish the first draft, but I'm loving the heroine, Rose and what I'm putting the poor girl through!
This week I travelled to Lumley Castle in County Durham for a meeting about the talk I'm giving there on March 22. It's now SOLD OUT but there's a second date added for Sunday June 28. To book your tickets, have a look here at the castle website, under Events then Talks and Teas. And this is the gorgeous room I'll be speaking in.
This week was International Womens' Day and I was delighted to be chosen by Sunderland Mind as their No. 1 favourite Sunderland author. How wonderful is that?
I was included in The Sunderland Echo's list of women who've made their mark, on International Women's Day too. Read the full list here.
And I'm going to be at the wonderfully named Fru Fru & Friends shop in Grangetown, Sunderland on the day before Mother's Day for a book signing. Come along if you can.
Also this week a reader sent me a picture of a bookcase with one of my books on it. Not just any bookcase, it's the one inside a counselling service in Sunderland, that I have used in the past too. Seeing my books shared second-hand puts a huge smile on my face.
And here are my books on display in Felling volunteer library where they've made me author of the month!
I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside weekly since 2016.

Keeping it local on World Book Day - My writing week
It's been a fantastic week!
I've started writing my next historical saga for Headline. It's called The Bakery Girls and I've made a wonderful, strong start.
Elsewhere this week my new book Celebrations at the Toffee Factory was included in The Bookseller's list of paperbacks coming out in May. They also included an image of the book cover, which was good to see.
I held the book launch for the hardback version of Celebrations at the Toffee Factory. This was held in the Crafty Gift Shop in Chester-le-Street, on the site of the toffee factory which inspired the books. The lady who owns the shop decorated the window and is such a great support.
In another local, supportive shop, The Petal Patch in Ryhope (where my Ryhope sagas are set and where I'm from), a local trader is making mini versions of my books in a mini bookcase. I'll be offering these as a competition prize soon so watch this space.
My cosy crimes were featured in the wonderful Scarborough Spy magazine. Thankyou, Yolanda!
And my author newsletter for March went out this week with a new competition and some excellent news. You can read it all online here.
I made the BBC news this week with the news that my cosy crimes are in development for the screen. Read all about it here.
And it also made the news on C21.net, the prestigious media industry news website. Read it all here.
And it went into the iPaper too!
I visited Featherbed Books in Houghton-le-Spring where I signed books on their shelves.
And Redcar & Cleveland libraries are now advertising my talk there in April as part of World Book Night. Book your place here.
Events I've joined, coming up are as follows, please come and say hello!
Well, all the news about my Scarborough cosy crimes had a wonderful effect on my book sales, pushing Murder at the Seaview Hotel to No.1 Bestseller slot in Cozy Animal Mysteries - thank you to Suki, the crime solving rescue greyhound! Read more about that here.
After the first event sold out so quickly, Lumley Castle have asked me to return for an author talk and cream tea event, this time in June. Book your tickets now at the Events page on the Castle website (under Talks and Teas). _

I'm hosting another history talk at local landmark to meet demand
A bestselling author, who draws inspiration from the heritage of Sunderland and the surrounding areas, has added another talk at a local landmark to meet demand.
Glenda Young recently released the third and final book in her Toffee Girls trilogy, which were inspired by Horner's toffee factory and Dainty Dinah toffee of Chester-le-Street.
The latest release, Celebrations at the Toffee Factory, is out now in hardback, audiobook, large print, libraries and ebook, with a paperback release coming in May.
Lumley Castle, in Chester-le-Street, features in the book as its characters rejoice in WW1 peace celebrations and Glenda’s initial author talk at the venue, entitled Sweet Stories of Chester-le-Street, has already sold out.
Now, she is staging a second talk on June 28 to meet demand, with tickets available here.
Glenda made her name in publishing with historical sagas such as The Tuppenny Child, The Paper Mill Girl and Belle of the Back Streets.
As well as releasing her third in the Toffee Girls trilogy, Glenda is also working on a new book about Sunderland’s signature pink slices.
As well as writing sagas, Glenda is also the author of the Scarborough-based Helen Dexter mystery series, which was shortlisted for the New Kid on the Block Award for Best New Series in the Dead Good Reader Awards.
She has also written official TV tie-in books for ITV’s Coronation Street and runs two international fan websites for the show.
In 2026, the author will celebrate 10 years writing a weekly soap opera called Riverside for The People’s Friend magazine.
She also sponsors a creative writing student at the University of Sunderland and her donation to Sunderland Women’s Centre will launch a new creative writing class there in 2026.
First date at Lumley Castle sold out in record time, I've been invited again in June. Get your tickets now. http://dlvr.it/TRV02J @sunderlandecho @katyjourno

Book Launch, Belgian Dirk and BBC Radio York
Ooh! Another busy week and I'm loving it. This week was the launch in hardback, ebook, audiobook and large print of the final book in the trilogy Celebrations at the Toffee Factory.
First off here's the real life Dirk who I named my character after in my book - Celebrations at the Toffee Factory. This smashing man is Dirk Musschoot, a Belgian, who helped me with the research into the Belgian Birtley town of Elisabethville.
This was also the week when I began writing my next historical saga The Bakery Girls. It's set in the slums of the East End of Sunderland in 1902. It's going great so far. 4 chapters written, 41 to go!
You can read an exclusive extract from Celebrations at the Toffee Factory at http://glendayoungbooks.com/celebrations
And the book launch is tomorrow - all welcome!
Plus my publisher Headline is offering you the chance to win all three books and toffees. Enter here.
And I was interviewed live on BBC Radio York this week, talking about the TV development of my Scarborough cosy crime series. You can listen to the interview played back on Joanita Musisi's show of Thursday 26/02/2026 where I begin talking at 34 minutes in.
I crafted another episode of my weekly soap opera
Riverside for The People's Friend magazine. I've been writing Riverside
weekly since 2016.
