So now we’ve got this random, hyperspecific 1700s cultural reference stuck in this song, which no one understands anymore!
So the song Yankee Doodle was a song originally written by the British making fun of the Americans. Like, “Look at that hick, sticking a feather in his hat and thinking he’s macaroni…” Except that the Americans just adopted the song (I’m guessing bc the song suggested that the Brits were effete).

I feel like there’s also a splash of “everything is gender” going on here, too. I haven’t seen anyone bemoaning the explosion in potato chip flavors out there as representing the decline and fall of American society, but since specialty coffee seems to be more female-coded it’s an easier target.
It is natural for people to want to eat food and drink beverages that taste delicious to them! Why would we ask people to sacrifice FLAVOR in service to an abstract puritan ideal?
I had access to equipment that could make caffeinated creations much different than what you could make your coffeemaker at home, or in your office break room. The whole point of the shop was to treat yourself to something that you yourself could not make!
If you wanted just a cup of black coffee, that was cool, too. But as a barista in the early 2000s I had 30 different Toriani syrups at my disposal… why not ask me to do something interesting with them?
If a customer had a super complex order, it meant they’d tried a lot of coffee and they’d found something that hit JUST right. As a coffee professional I could re-create that “just right” for them, and that was pretty cool!
I worked as a barista in college, and it was actually my favorite job ever. I love coffee. I love making people happy with fanciful coffee creations. I loved crafting artful peaks of steamed milk on a cappuccino, finding the new flavor combinations that surprised and titillated the taste buds.
When I used to work as a barista long, long ago in college, I tended not to mind the folks with complicated drink orders because they tended to tip well.
