βItβs International Womenβs Day. Why arenβt you smiling?β
Happy International Womenβs Day. Women are great.
Amanda Foreman addresses the camera in her BBC documentary βThe Ascent of Womanβ. A subtitle shows that she is describing a ritual of some kind, saying βAnd then in the afternoon, the women shouted obscenitiesβ
β¦and probably with good reason, on International Womenβs Day or indeed any other
I can say this publicly now - connected to this piece - it always disappointed me how rarely Monkey Cage had more than one female panellist - in my final series I think only 2 out of 7 episodes had more than one female guest - I pushed for many years but ultimately failed and now Iβm gone
The Boxer is just one of the best songs recorded ever.
(The Central Park gig)
I think I had a double cassette of it...
Israel is bombarding, literally bombarding, two Middle East capitals, Beirut and Tehran, killing 100s of civilians, and yet the US and UK media continue to portray Iran as the threat to the region.
Israel has nukes, but Iran is the nuclear threat.
We live in Orwellian times.

Oh, excuse my excitement as itβs soooo long since I last wrote a book and sometimes it all seems like I just dreamt it. But I have an actual author page on the Penguin website!

On World Book Day, may I heartily recommend books? Theyβre really good. I bloody love them.
Also you may not know, but once upon a time I wrote some books and was a mildly promising writer. Some of them are even still purchasable. www.janehill.co.uk/books.html
really tired of conversations about how we need to get people to spend more time offline that don't acknowledge that one of the reasons people ARE online is their access needs aren't being met in physical spaces. This is especially true for queer people and disabled people.
The Access to Work Scheme is designed to help people with disabilities work - travel, equipment etc
Not only does Citizens Advice say people are facing significant delays in reimbursement but now this..
#Disability
6 years of work on an extremely moderate plan to mitigate car traffic. But some car owners from around the country didn't like that idea and said so in a "consultation," so now it'll be just more and more of this.
I guess the people in charge don't want anyone to want to move here. Who would?

I actually don't have words as to how angry I am.
Wonder what happened in these countries that people on student visas in the UK found themselves needing to apply for asylum instead of going home post 2021.
UK Labour are heartless bastards & apparently have bo idea whats happening in the world.
we protected my mom from COVID for 5 years. She caught it at the hospital during an outbreak in the dialysis ward (!!) and died 5 days later.
we will do nothing with this information as a society
But 'cremulator' is a nice word. Sounds like something you'd make posh coffee with.
To be honest I still quite like Izzard's idea of being twanged into a tree...
Also, the comedian in me just spotted "The process involves weighing the body" and I wanna say I'm not keen on the idea of being shamed for my BMI after death, as well...
I like that they put the line "This story contains details of water cremation which some readers may find upsetting" underneath "The powdered remains are given back to relatives in an urn" and not, you know, at the top of the article...
(I don't mind seeing people being totes emoshe on telly - I quite like it. I just don't want it every ten minutes if it feels convoluted)
I didn't eat vegetables (despite being vegetarian from a really young age) for the first half of my life because I didn't know it was possible to cook them without bleaching them. I was in my late teens/early 20s before I learned to cook dried pasta.
The last series' of (Celeb) Race Across the World were especially excruciating. I don't know if I'll watch the next ones. They're on a literal journey. That's enough. I don't need them to all have a figurative one every time the camera is in their face as well.
Iβm no good at pottery but even if I were, Iβd struggle to think of personal stories to tell in my pottery. Itβs like on Masterchef when they have to cook a meal based on a food memory. All my food memories are shit roast dinners or Heinz Toast Toppers.
I was just catching up on last weekβs #potterythrowdown ahead of this weekβs semifinal - and for the love of god, please stop asking competitors to bare their souls. Almost every challenge so far has asked for a personal story and that episode was particularly heavy. Canβt they just make pots?

Itβs Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, everyone. Thereβs no routine screening for ovarian cancer, and it isnβt picked up by other gynaecological screening (such as smear tests). But if you do think it might be a possibility, you can ask your GP for a blood test and/or a scan.
To be fair to them I don't mind them dropping the parcel and running away, as long as they're consistent, because that way, I know what to expect. I know it'll arrive and I just have to get to the package before it gets stolen. I'd prefer it if they knocked the door...
They told me they'd "delivered" to our "outbuilding", the other week (we don't have one). They meant they'd slung it over the wall out the front, as usual.
What's funny is next day they "couldn't deliver" because there was nowhere to leave it.
I was in, both times. They couldn't be arsed to knock.
