From the coming weekend, winter is over in central Europe.
Come on. Do you really believe there will be fair midterms?!
Oh, you actually SAW them?

Well, I've seen the aurora in Greenland, Svalbard and Alaska, but never before in Copenhagen (even though I tried at least 30 times). But tonight, I was lucky. Between 22.15 and 22.30 not to the north, but rather almost above me.
These are the icy mountains of Pluto. It took 9 years to get these magnificent images… and 4.8 billion kilometers.

A Black man was killed by ICE (off duty) in Los Angeles on New Year’s Eve. And like Renée Good, he was an American citizen. But most people have not heard about Keith Porter.
I need y’all to realize this. Black people experience this lack of visibility all the time when it comes to being victims.
Cold winter weather in Europe is coming to an end on Monday.

News from the Danish public service station DR about Maduro (headlines, in Danish).
To cite the president whose name I cannot remember, closing down NCAR will be yet another step towards the United Sh*tholes of America.
Finally, here it is. Also this year, I have together with @ruthmottram.bsky.social commented on the fate of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Thanks for your patience, @carbonbrief.org. One of the highlights: 2024/25 was the 29th year in a row with net mass loss. See www.carbonbrief.org/guest-post-h...

Have a safe trip and successful field work!
Thanks to our colleagues from #DTUSpace for preparing and providing the data!
And that's why there will be no midterms.
Time series showing the mass balance for the Greenland Ice Sheet from April 2002 to July 2025. There is a gain in the mass of ice when there is precipitation, and a loss when snow and ice melt and when icebergs break off from the ice sheet’s major outlet glaciers. The difference in these mass changes over a glaciological year (September-August) is called the total mass balance of the Greenland Ice Sheet. Shown here is the month-by-month mass change measured in gigatonnes, Gt (1 Gt is 1 milliard (UK) or 1 billion (US) tonnes or 1 cubic kilometer of water). The data is obtained from the GRACE and GRACE-FO satellites. Over the last 23 years, the ice sheet has lost about 5200 gigatonnes of ice. This has led to a sea level rise of 1.5 centimetres.
New GRACE data available on the Polar Portal. From April 2002 to July 2025, the Greenland Ice Sheet has lost roughly 5200 gigatonnes (=km³). This has contributed 1.5 cm to global sea level rise and would be enough to cover Denmark with 121 m of water.

Hurricane Melissa, an extremely dangerous category 5 hurricane with a core pressure of 892 hPa (rank 3) and maximum sustained winds of 295 km/h (also rank 3) just before landfall on Jamaica's south coast. After crossing the island, it will also hit eastern Cuba. Note that one can see "down" the eye.
The leftmost five stars of Big Dipper can be seen in the upper right corner. The bright star near the lower left corner is Arcturus, the fourth brightest star in the skies. Halfway between Alkaid (the leftmost star of Big Dipper) and Arcturus, comet Lemmon is the greenish spot which slightly looks out of focus.
The comet is in the lower left corner. Note the tiny tail. Note also the second star in Big Dipper, which actually is a double star (Alkor and Mizar).
Lemmon is the greenish dot left of the middle of the photo.
Not extremely convincing, but I managed to see comet Lemmon. All photos with my Samsung S22, night mode, three minutes exposure.

Cover painting for Collier's magazine, May 1954, entitled Weather made to order? In the foreground, a meteorologist with a white shirt, tie, and glasses moves a large lever on a control panel. Leaning back, he looks at the sky of the landscape behind him. One half of the background shows a red and orange sky and a sunny green landscape. The other half shows dark storm clouds. Snow is covering the ground and also falling, while a stroke of lightning hits the ground.
Things were easier in 1954 when meteorologists still wore ties.
The accumulated surface mass balance (SMB) for the "SMB year" 1 September 2024 to 31 August 2025 ended at 403.8 Gt (=km³), which is a little above the average 1980-2025, mainly due to the rather cool summer. There is mass gain over the interior of the ice sheet and mass loss along the coasts, in particular in southwestern Greenland.
Accumulated surface mass balance (SMB) 1 Sep 2024 to 31 Aug 2025 was 403.8 Gt (=km³), close to the average 1980-2025. SMB is snowfall - runoff, i.e. always positive.
This is NOT the total mass balance TMB, which also includes iceberg calving and which shows ice loss for the 29th year in a row.
Components of the total mass balance over the Greenland Ice Sheet for the hydrological years 1987-2025. The hydrological year 2025 goes from 1 September 2024 to 31 August 2025, similar for other years. Total mass balance TMB: red line, should be zero on average, but isn't. Greenland has lost ice for the last 29 years in a row. TMB is the sum of the following three components: SMB: surface mass balance (snowfall minus runoff, blue line) - always positive, only possibility for the ice sheet to gain mass. Highly variable ("weather"); MMB: marine mass balance (calving of icebergs, melting of glacier tongues in contact with sea water, green line) - always negative, ice loss has slightly increased over time; BMB: basal mass balance (frictional effects, ground heat flux, orange line) - small, but also always negative. In 2024/25, the Greenland Ice Sheet has lost 105 Gt (=105 cubic kilometers) of ice. Note that the SMB values differ from those published on the @polarportal, since the figure shown here is an average of three models. Based on Mankoff et al. (2021, updated), https://doi.org/10.5194/essd-13-5001-2021.
Components of the total mass balance TMB, hydr. years 1987-2025:
SMB: surface mass balance (snowfall-runoff),
MMB: marine mass balance (calving of icebergs),
BMB: basal mass balance (friction).
2024/25: the 29th year in a row with negative TMB.
