Happy New Year, friends. It has obviously been a tough year and fittingly I am ending it with a headache. But I'm grateful for my internet communities and looking forward to 2026. Onward, and cheers π₯

ITV: βThis landscape of destruction looks other-worldly, but itβs not.β
A view of Gaza from above shows the scale of what Israel has done, as they move to occupy Gaza amidst Palestinian starvation.
This is amongst the most impactful two minutes of broadcasting Iβve ever seen.

This is all real. This is not propaganda or fakes. This is real suffering, real deaths, a real tragedy that Ukrainian people are living through because of Russian aggression.
Thankful to everyone on Ukraine's side! To everyone who brings peace closer.

Couldn't agree more.
Dept are avoiding it to avoid the cost of it but it's a scandal.
For those who haven't gotten a chance to explore the new guidelines yet, I've done an explainer for primary.

Those routes are prohibitively expensive in my view; they need to be subsidised by the department.
I have to mention before we finish that it is a scandal that the recent guidelines have not referenced the SENCO role. It needs to be recognised, standardised, formalised and supported. The current system is too onerous and the level of support for AEN teams varies from school to school! #edchatie
Listen and hear.
As a parent, even one who's also a Principal, these meetings were terrifying initially. You know you child is struggling & you can't fix it. It's heartbreaking.
I didn't sleep a wink the night before my sons first school support meeting.
Empathise. Listen. Hear.

A lot of teachers who have plenty of experience in SEN would love to become EPs etc. Same for SNAs but there are no professional pathways to becoming an education psychologist, physiotherapist etc. we could also adopt the paraprofessional model they have in the US. #edchatie
The shortage of multidisciplinary professions should be classed as crisis. There are huge barriers to becoming a qualified OT/SLT/EP etc. I know a few people who would love to change careers but it costs β¬22000 to do the professional conversion courses. #edchatie
I am also an English teacher. You could have 5 separate class groups meaning you could have a high % of approx 150 students with literacy issues etc. Due to subject timetable and AP post demands or you might not be available to meet with AEN dept/AENCO or meet your studentsβ needs. #EdChatIE
Eoin Lawlor, post-primary, SET and for Autism Coordinator. I feel the Continuum of Support and SSP were designed for primary school. New guidelines point to a need for collaboration and planning between AEN and subject teachers but there is no gain/admin time allocated to our timetables! #EdChatIE
π©βπ« Teachers always have brilliant ideas for tools that would make their lives easier.
But hereβs the problem: most of us donβt have the coding skills to build them.
I used ChatGPT to create an entire safeguarding app for my schoolβwithout knowing any code. π§΅
I look forward to to using it Simon. Thanks a million.
Yep, it really should have got more traction. It sidestepped the pitfalls of portraying heinous people and manages to imbue a degree of humanity and pathos. The acting is sublime and the music and setting really captures the grime and grift of 80s New York. A modern retelling of Frankenstein.
1/ π Why Principals Need to Stop Engaging with the SET Allocations
Of all the things that have been thrust on primary principals in the last number of years, the SET Allocations Model is the worst. Coined "The Cluster Games" here's why I think we need to stop engaging. π§΅
