Book cover for the forthcoming book The Scarlet Ball, by Nghi Vo. An Asian woman in a red Gilded Age ballgown faces the viewer defiantly holding a mask made to resemble a white woman's face. There are dark smoky hands reaching for her out of the darkness, grabbing her arms and caressing her face.

We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable. So did the divine right of kings. Any human power can be resisted and changed by human beings. Resistance and change often begin in art, and very often in our art, the art of words.

Spring forward was all fun and games to my kids until they had to wake up for school this morning. 0/10 do not recommend.

The cover of THE MISEDUCATION OF CAROLINE BINGLEY by Lindz McLeod. Two women in regency dress sit on a pink picnic blacket. The blonde woman in the light yellow dress offers a bright red apple to the dark-haired woman in the purple dress. Behind them we can see a lake and in the far distance, two horses stand in front of a grand house.

"There's an enjoyable slow burn romance that heats up in a very satisfactory way... A bouncy, energetic feel-good take that's infinitely less mean-spirited than the source text and offers happiness to far more people."

I often wait as long as possible to get my hair cut until I’m in crisis mode and my hair is too heavy and hurts. I said β€œDo something fun, it’s almost spring, the world’s on fire, yolo.”

I can finally SCREAAAM about this! New bingo square unlocked for me as an editor at @ruadanbooks.bsky.social !

This novella is so wild and so cool. Imagine an vampire story with the vibe of a European 90s action movie. If that makes sense. (It will.)

Not a writer but I am a reviewer of short fiction and I will not cover any magazines that accept work that has genAI involved in any capacity, including illustrations. Nor will I cover writers that use genAI in any capacity.

Hey, something nice recently. "On Planetary Palliative Care" (2023), published by Interzone Digital, is getting translated to French for Bifrost Magazine/Γ‰ditions du BΓ©lial'. It was a quiet piece in 2023 but still finding new homes. Worth guarding rights as a writer. Never know where things end up.

Short break from insanity to share that UNCERTAIN SONS is a BSFA finalist. A testament to @undertow.bsky.social's thoughtful work more than anything else that the book has gone anywhere. Thanks to them and to folks who support indies like UP. Means a lot. Congrats to all the finalists.

"The notion of making a living with A.I.-generated books appears to be based on the belief algorithms will be serving up book slop the same way we are force-fed other kinds of slop"

I'm still not over losing my job as a book reviewer. Here's why we need book critics:

Don't be fooled by this bill's name-- this is a book banning bill that will exclude LGBTQ books from all public schools NATIONWIDE.

Call your congresspeople and tell them to VOTE NO on this nakedly bigoted book banning bullshit.
