my biggest mario kart hot take is I think theres room for both modern and classic balloon battle formats to exist side by side. just have it be an option, last-one-standing, or time based. whichever you prefer. they both have their strengths.

It's a mashup of different arcade games. You, the enemies and the world around you will swap around. You just gotta defeat them all.

thats a very good point! and like, I'm fully planning on fleshing this character out. for context, this character is like, a computer geek, they're a programmer, stuff like that. so I'd imagine they're around screens a lot, and so I'd imagine they'd be very mindful of what they do and stuff then

granted, that could be considered supernatural, but i dont wanna be insensitive by going down the flashing lights route. supernatural elements already exist in this story, the entity doing this kill isnt supernatural however, so im in a bit of a pickle there.
