Great logo for the 1995 Evolution meeting in Montreal.
Wiarton Willie is dead, long live Wiarton Willie. We now enter the Willie interregnum period.
Our condolences to Wiarton and groundhog enthusiasts everywhere.
Since I've had journalists asking me about the recent falling cat science paper that just dropped, here's the blog post I wrote about it recently. π§ͺ skullsinthestars.com/2026/03/07/n...
On a related note, I think I have received letters/emails for almost all of these variants:
As a Tristan born in Alberta in the 70s, I am obliged to share (and in case you were wondering about the sudden spike: that was the name of Brad Pittsβs character in 1994βs Legends of the Fall)

It now includes the latest data (for 2025) and a similar-names function to easily browse through various spellings in naming trends.
@pankajd.bsky.social & @darrenobbard.bsky.social show that immune genes overall evolve faster at the protein level, but are less prone to copy-number changes than other genes in Drosophila.

Happy to be able to share our review of the consequences of rising temperatures on animal fertility, led by @rhondasnook.bsky.social with @liamdougherty.bsky.social and Claudia Fricke. Research is getting active in this area but there's still a lot of unknowns...

πΏ Postdoc opportunity in plant evolutionary ecology/genetics!
My lab in the Dept. of Ecology & Evolutionary Biology at the University of Michigan is recruiting a postdoctoral researcher to start Fall 2026.
We study plant adaptation, using weeds as model systems.

I am tired of people insinuating that biology education research and disability advocacy within the field or STEM at large are "less rigorous" or "less important" pursuits when both of these areas of critical research are what will help us continue moving the field forward.
Eugenics still has a lingering touch on how we discuss genetics in our classroom spaces, and many of the examples that we use such as talking about diseases are based in erroneous eugenics-inspired thought. This is why we need disabled biologists. www.lifescied.org/doi/10.1187/...
I get yelled at for saying this but for many hundreds of years people went to university not to get diplomas or be employable but because immersion in the humanities was considered foundational to a good life, and school must return to its original purpose: the joy of learning.
