The Velvet Underground At The Boston Tea Party Photographs by The Modern Painter Presented by Phil Milstein and Alfredo Garcia 245 pages
Great new photo book of the Velvet Undergroundβs Boston Tea Party shows. The thinly veiled photographer was a teenage super fan who soon would start a band using the same adjective.
Iβm saddened to find out this morning that my friend Brendan Foreman passed away. Brendan lived in Dublin and was possibly the worldβs biggest Michael Hurley fan. He ran the Blue Navigator Magazine which reported on all things Hurley for 30 years.
I posted this shot of my Reichel LPs last year when someone was singing the praises of the first Fred Frith solo LP. Reichel will forever be one of the greatest guitar innovators.
Best news of the year so far!
500 copies there. Where are they hiding?
Chris Knox, Not Given Lightly. A biography by Craig Robertson.
Chris Knox, Not Given Lightly. A biography by Craig Robertson.
Iβm looking forward to tear into this one. Since itβs a biography on Chris Knox it is also a great looking book with lots of reproductions of his great cartoon art.
Made the move. πfor tip.
TFUL282 fans need to check out Steaming Coils.

The Sound - All Fall Down (WEA)
Some days this is my favorite LP by The Sound. Their darkest and recorded while all four members were fighting different addictions. Iβm sure WEA realized that they would never enter the U2, Cure and Simple Minds sweepstakes with this one.
Al Stewart - Orange (CBS)
Are there fans of this LP out there? Resides in a world somewhere between Hunky Dory and pre-cosmic Roy Harper.
Have you ever seen this Alpes footage? What sounds like a sequencer is actually a electro motor powered contraption. Amazing stuff.

Classic!
Don Covay & The Jefferson Lemon Blues Band - The House Of Blue Lights (Atlantic, 1969)
Absolutely! Also very evident on this β69 LP. Covay recorded a slew of great Atlantic 45s between β66 and β69 that have never been properly anthologized. And then there are the many pre-Atlantic 45s on which Covay sounds like a rabid Little Richard. If only I was running a reissue label.

Reebop Kwaku Baah ββ Reebop (Island, 1972)
Groovy mix of jazz, funk and township jive by this Ghanaian percussionist who put in time with Traffic and Can.
Amory Kane - Just To Be There (CBS, UK, 1970)
After owning an iffy bootleg since the 90s, I finally ran into an original of this Amory Kane LP. Fab folk-psych produced by Tony Cox (Trees, Caravan). With nice electronic flourishes by Ron Geesin. One that needs a proper reissue.
RIP Amos Poe. I remember seeing his Subway Riders movie in 1983 before Sonic Youth tore into an amazing set. The movie is about serial killing sax player. Thurstonβs memorable band introduction was βWeβre The Sonic Youth from New York City and we hate saxophones!β
Weird coincidence. I open the paper and see that Amos Poe passed. I was just talking about the first time I saw Sonic Youth. There was no opening band. Instead there was a screening of Poeβs Subway Riders. A movie about a NYC serial killer who lures his victims with his saxophone.
First time I saw Sonic Youth was on that 1983 tour in Nijmegen. A life changing experience. Thurston stepped on stage with the words βWeβre The Sonic Youth from New York City and we hate saxophones.β
Brother JT3 - Jelly Roll Gospel (Drag City)
Brother JT. Now, thatβs a brother I believe in.
Roots Radics was always killing it when I saw them backing Israel Vibration, Eek-A-Mouse and others around 1990. The spot near Flabbaβs amp was so sweet.
Nice bill. In 1996 I organized a full US tour for the all those acts minus Plover.
Cash is the way to buy records. Many used record stores donβt charge tax when you flash cash.
Nice story on Dutch artist Marte RΓΆling and the album covers she created in the 1960s for jazz records that have since become rare.

The low frequencies are unbelievable, even on my fairly basic stereo. I would love to hear this LP through a good club PA.
So many lists and almost no overlap with my faves. Here is the 2025 year end list of my other favorite Dutch record store.
The Bug vs. Ghost Dubs - Implosion (Pressure)
Testing the bunker-busting capabilities of my speakers. This must be one of the sickest dub explorations ever. π§¨π€―π§¨
