Tuxedo cat lying on his side on a sofa with his right arm extended in a manner reminiscent of the early 80s song Safety Dance. But really he's just a cute, lounging cat.

Rev. Jesse Jackson's "I *am* somebody..." remains one of the all-time great pieces of 20th century rhetoric / agitprop
And he could deliver it at a Black separatist meeting, the Democratic National Convention, or on god-blessed Sesame Street (see below π₯Ή)

"We arenβt taking very good care of [Earth], but that could change. For me, thatβs what Star Trek is all about. Not the promise of a high-tech future where we escape our world, but rather one where we learn to respect the incredible spaceship that is our home planet." -Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein
In her @newscientist.com column, Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein did not mince words: Elon Musk has misunderstood the point of Star Trek.
The idea that a heavily corporate and militarized approach to exploration will create a prosperous future? Illogical.

On this day in 1759, 267 years ago, the radical abolitionist Benjamin Lay passed away at age 77. A hundred years before William Lloyd Garrison, Lay called for the immediate and complete abolition of slavery worldwide, with no payments to enslavers. Let us remember him. Art by Marco Lorenzetti.
You may recall that in January of 2025, artist Ann Telnaes announced that she had quit The Washington Post after editors killed a cartoon that depicted owner Jeff Bezos, among others, genuflecting to Trump.
This cartoon feels even more relevant this week.
That is gorgeous!

Getting the impression that ICE is gearing up for a pogrom in Springfield, Ohio, which was ground zero of Vanceβs lies about Haitians during the campaign. Haitians lose temporary protected status on February 3rd. Reporters, lawyers, neighbors β please get ready.
Wish I could attend both days, but I'm really looking forward to Friday's sessions.
Thanks for reprinting my letter. It is included in Read This When Things Fall Apart: bookshop.org/p/books/read...
Statement from Michael and Susan Pretti Parents of Alex Jeffrey Pretti βWe are heartbroken but also very angry. Alex was a kindhearted soul who cared deeply for his family and friends and also the American veterans whom he cared for as an ICU nurse at the Minneapolis VA hospital. Alex wanted to make a difference in this world. Unfortunately, he will not be with us to see his impact. I do not throw around the βheroβ term lightly. However, his last thought and act was to protect a woman. The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trumpβs murdering and cowardly ICE thugs. He had his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down, all while being pepper sprayed. Please get the truth out about our son. He was a good man. Thank you.

We've published deeply on Cuba, Venezuela, and US policy toward Latin America, and as these issues return to the headlines, history matters more than ever. Authors: if youβve written on this topic, drop your book title + link below and let's build a thread that helps make sense of this moment.

We don't do fundraising pushes very often, but that's because we're fortunate enough to have a loyal group of monthly givers. Almost everything you read this year was paid for by 161 people.

NEW: As the Trump administration ordered agencies to eradicate βillegalβ diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, we identified more than 1,000 nonprofits that removed such language from the mission statements in their tax filings.
I wish a notice like this wasn't necessary.
