Yellow lady's slipper (Cypripedium parviflorum), growing in an open fissure in limestone barrens, Manitoulin Island, Ontario, Canada, May 29/11. While there are always exceptions, the vast majority of Cypripedium parviflorum grow in areas dominated by limestone rock or alkaline drainage.
Pink lady's slipper, (Cypripedium acaule), a native orchid, growing on sandy soil soil in an open coniferous forest. This orchid prefers acidic soil - or said alternatively, substrate that is not rich in calcium carbonate.
