Led a seminar on Stephen Stein’s Shaker book. Seminar participants tore it apart. I made a comment about what he had done to move forward scholarship beyond nice-ism or demonization. Peers dismissed me. Advisor pulled me aside and said good observation. Made a difference to me in many ways.
Southern Baptist Theological and Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary as late as the early 1990s he would not be an outlier. Personal experience.
Historians have long contributed in this way. Keep it up. We can aid archivists and librarians in preserving stuff and helping share stuff with the greater public. Way to go @historians.org!
Lenten reflection (story of feeding 5000 edition): we should never act out of a sense of scarcity. Abundance is made up of small acts of giving.

I have thought about MLK’s challenge to Johnson’s *war on poverty* while mobilizing for actual war. King consistently noted that every dollar spent on S Vietnam was more than a dollar lost in the war against poverty. He was correct.
No one bothers with poverty today so this math will be far worse.
I did not share the original story because my gut was that the sourcing was dubious. Someone who knows more about the sole source confirms that skepticism. Don't fall for clickbait, read the piece linked below.

I'm teaching about early 20th century eugenics today and was reminded that 9 years ago Republican Representative Steve King was stripped of his committee assignments by his GOP colleagues for this post that simply states what is now bog standard GOP policy/rhetoric on immigration and "civilization."

Remember: Donald Trump created this crisis. He walked away from the Iran nuclear deal that was working, promising a "better deal." He didn't deliver. He escalated, abandoned real diplomacy, and has now led us into a conflict that puts us all at risk.
We have unleashed a regional war. It is NOT a significant leap to world war.
Virginia Tech is a senior military institution. i teach courses on the medieval world & crusades and so have cadets (and vets) from every branch of service that have, over my 20 years, served in Iraq and Afghanistan (and elsewhere).

In my view, that’s almost as critical a project as any other structural reform project necessary in the wake of trumpism. We should become a society that actually values human life such that we would feel shame about this.
LOL I got an R&R from the AHR when I was about to be a mom & was like #oops, they didn't like the essay enough, too busy to fix all this.
I didn't realize they *wanted* me to resubmit* & I could argue for what I wanted to do & not. I've published plenty since but I wish I knew to prioritize that!
