One of the biggest drivers of increased costs is the marketing of larger and larger vehicles as the safer choice in an arm's race among consumers to have the largest vehicle involved in a crash and 'win'
$3,998.54, or 17.1%, of price increases since 2002 is due to people choosing larger trucks
Tonight, I joined Astoria neighbors to demand that the city stand by its 31st Street safety project & appeal a ridiculous court order to rip up the protected bike lane.
Afterwards, I participated in a die-in protest where advocates read names of those we've lost to traffic violence.

After cameras were installed in Toronto:

If all U.S. communities implemented Montgomery County’s speed camera program, more than 21,000 fatal or incapacitating injuries would have been prevented over a year.

I interviewed with Crystal Graham of Augusta Free Press in Waynesboro, Virginia. We spoke about many road safety issues and my daughter Robyn's tragic death. Augusta and Waynesboro's bicycle & pedestrian infrastructure, is poor at best. Like so may cities, the priority is given to motor vehicles.
"In late July, one horrific crash claimed two victims on Canal St. and less than 24 hours later, another crash in the same intersection injured two people... Canal St. is undeniably one of the most dangerous corridors in Manhattan."
My daughter Robyn was killed in New York City doing bicycle messenger work on June 24th, 2019 due in part because of unsafe road conditions. I fully support a safer McGuinness Boulevard.

Everyone should be able to get home safe whether they are driving, walking, biking, taking transit, or moving in whatever way they choose
Federal data says that we spend $3.35 per person per year on biking and walking projects - about the price of one gallon of gas - not a massive investment
Great to see Ohio and Washington take meaningful action to address dangerous state-owned roads
Especially great to see Ohio's "$25 million Target Speed Pilot, testing low-speed design strategies like curb bump-outs, narrowed lanes and gateway treatments to support 25 mph travel in urban areas"
Canada and the US are both car-centric, spacious countries. But an American is 2.5x more likely to die in a crash than a Canadian – and the gap is widening.

The authors of this study say that Canada is a good model for the US because it also has a similar approach to traffic laws where provinces, rather than the federal government, make the laws
In the US, Congress provides NHTSA funding to incentivize the adoption of some laws but incentives are small
