It's been too long since I've had a good Saturday scanning session. Very careful attention from my coworker today!
Well done, Xiuwen!
We're hosting an early International Women in Maths Day event in Brisbane next Monday - come hang out and eat lunch. All genders welcome, but you gotta like maths and women killing it. Research talks from women, professional development discussions, free food smp.uq.edu.au/event/sessio....

The @ausphysics.bsky.social Condensed Matter & Materials Meeting was so good. Highlights:
πA great after-dinner talk, given by Liz Bridge, about working in industry
πSo much excellent student work.
πGreat conversations about how best to support/promote condensed matter in Australia.

The @ausphysics.bsky.social Condensed Matter and Materials Meeting has kicked off at the beautiful University of Queensland, with conference Chair Ben Powell getting us underway. Day One of Wagga in Brisbane had great talks and great posters!

What a great set of speakers at the #APMC13 Scanning Probe Microscopy session - really nice to see the work being done using innovative approaches to scanning probe.
An infographic table from the AIP website: Percent of Astronomy Faculty Members Who Are Women, 2010 to 2022 In 2022, 17% of full professors, 37% of Associate Professors, 35% of Assistant Professors, 35% of Instructor/Adjuncts, and 18% of "other ranks" were women. Overall, this is 23% women, and down from 2020's overall of 27% (matching 2018's rates). Source: aip.org/statistics

Fun facts about physics & astronomy, according to the American Institute of Physics (AIP):
Fewer than one quarter of astronomy faculty or instructors, at any rank, are women. Fewer than one in five physics faculty or instructors, at any rank, are women.

#AMST24 had so many good parts that it's hard to pick a highlight, but one of the biggest moments had to be Australia's Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley reflecting on her time in the role and the way science will continue to shape our future - insightful and inspiring!

It's a beautiful morning in Hobart on the second day of #AMST24 - yesterday featured an amazing collection of presentations and posters, and today will bring more of the same. @kouroshkalantar.bsky.social @xiuwenzhou.bsky.social
Should be an excellent, absolutely packed couple of days of science - really looking forward to seeing the people and the work!
It's been a real pleasure to work with Ping, Alex and Victoria over the past year on the On-Surface Synthesis Collection for Communications Chemistry. If you haven't browsed the Collection yet, it's worth a look - absolutely beautiful work from leaders in the field.

Photo of a computer monitor showing scanning tunneling microscopy image acquisition of a Si(001) surface
Today's Saturday scanning is a blast from the past - starting to remember how tricky it is to prepare nice Si(100) surfaces, and how difficult it is to get uniform heating across the sample.
Published today in Langmuir ASAP @acspublications.bsky.social - our recent work looking at whether graphene can protect the Si(111)-7x7 reconstruction from oxidation in air. The answer? Kind of. #OzChem #SurfaceScience
