Some would say Hutch is a great friend! ...Until the plot.

And some would say that about Eleanor! ...Until the plot.

I love putting people through the wringer.

Oh, fun!

Jack is always queasy around rot and decay, and will never move on from his experiences with it.

Hutch will always risk his life for a friend.

Maggie is too jaded for romance, and too cynical that it won't work out.

Eleanor will always be an optimist, to a fault.

Every r/newauthor post on Reddit is basically me calling someone out for AI use in the comments.

At this point, if you use gen AI in any capacity, I don't think you are smart enough to even write a book, so you might as well find another hobby.

Ah, my introduction to Eleanor in the first draft of one of my chapters yesterday. Everyone's favorite southern shotgun-weilding nurse practitioner.

I am actually getting sick of how many people are using AI in the writing community. Guys, why not work on your technical skill? Why prove you can't structure a story on your own? And why produce yourself out of a job and passion? #writing

Someone told me recently that I should look into writing LitRPG, and I had no idea what that was. I spent a few days wondering before satiating my curiousity and looking it up, only to discover it is every audiobook my boyfriend has ever listened to, lol. #writing

It helped to have us all together, but I missed Eleanor’s place beside us. She would never leave if there was a patient, and there was always a patient.
The three of us ended up four blocks away from Eden, and the buildings that made the town look nice and unassuming quickly turned into rows of warehouses. Corrugated metal siding, faded paint, loading docks with their doors hanging open or sealed shut. It had only been two months since the Fall, roughly, and weeds had grown up from every crack and orifice they could find, shooting up toward the sky in a way that would’ve taken years before. Between two warehouses was a giant alleyway, and it was populated with what looked like a hundred sunflowers, their heavy heads drooping in the afternoon heat. As we passed, I considered cutting one off with my knife for Maggie, but she beat me to it: β€œWe can roast these for the seeds,” she said, grabbing onto one of the stalks to pull a flower down to her face. Pollen made her wrinkle her nose.
β€œDo you know how to roast a whole sunflower?” Hutch asked.
She shrugged. β€œDoesn’t seem hard.”
β€œLet’s come back for them.” I glanced around. It would be too much to carry for us right now.
Hutch, Maggie, and I decided on a warehouse that was about two stories tall with a flat roof and fire escape. Maggie climbed onto Hutch’s back to look through the windows and gave us an all-clear. I broke the lock with the butt of my rifle, the rust having degraded it to the point where I could crush it with my hand if I wasn’t terrified of tetanus in the apocalypse.

Her eyes betrayed her harsh tone. They were wet at the corners, and I knew for a fact that she didn’t like this any more than I did. Maggie might have been practical, but I knew there was a young woman under that protective shell of hers. Sometimes it’s easy to forget that a few months ago, Maggie was an entirely different person. She was normal back then. β€œThere’s nothing we can do. If I got split from you two, I’d have to find my own way back.”
Bullshit, I thought, giving Hutch a glance. He had it written across his face, and I knew it too: we’d never leave Maggie behind. Not just because she’s Maggie, but because Eleanor would fucking kill us.
But if I left them now, they would come for me, just like I would go to them. It was that same loyalty, how we found each other and now are glued together by survival and fate. It would devastate Eleanor to lose any of us. At this point it was like losing a family member, especially one that you never expected to go.
But none of this was going to make me feel any better about leaving her behind. I struggled to swallow, shoving thoughts of that terrified woman out of my head. Her face seemed so familiar to me, and yet I couldn’t pin down a reason why. Maybe I’d cuffed her in the past, or responded to a distburance call. Maybe she worked at one of Austin’s outreach shelters and I was there giving my typical presentations on personal safety and self-defense. Whatever the reason was, I knew that I’d seen her somewhere before, and the thought of abandoning someone who’d already been in my life somehow rubbed salt in the wound.

Unfortunately in one of my scrap chapters...but I still am fond of it. Any bit with Maggie in it is a bit I like.

Because a lot of people think of writing as transactional instead of an art form. I see so many people who think they can tell a good story (and maybe they can) but think AI can complete it for them.

No, but he was a stranger. I’d stumbled right into him half-dead, delirious from dehydration, and I stole his pocketknife from his center console to cut him free from that overturned truck. Hutch walked like a zombie behind me, slowly recovering over two days. One of those days we’d been holed up in a house with boarded windows, and I watched over his sleeping body while Bees crawled the neighborhood outside, their searchlights cutting through the cracks. I did that for a stranger. And I did it again, when we ran into Maggie and Eleanor hiding in that SUV, half-starved and terrified. And again, when we walked right into Eden with nothing telling us that they were good people. Humans help each other. That’s just what we did.
I would need to help her, at whatever the cost.
I patted myself down, my hands moving quickly over pockets and belt, thinking of anything that they could use if I died. There was a finite amount of resources now left in the world; anything that got glassed by the Bee’s laser-focused plasma guns would be an excruciating loss. I unstrapped my rifle and handed it over to Maggie. β€œHold onto this for me.”
She gripped it without thinking, her small hands wrapping around the stock, but then her eyes snapped up to mine. β€œWhy? Jack, why are youβ€”β€œ
β€œI’m going to sneak her out of there.”

I know Bees don't sound intimidating, but what if I want my alien robot invaders to have cute little wings?!

one of my favorite old posters in mealprep (i think) was a woman who banded together with 7 others and they meal-prepped en mass for their families. it really revolutionized how i thought about food prep
