This is such an important point! I have a bunch to say about it, but I'll just register that I find the push to use llms in education to be a non starter because of this. (Or rather students should be trained to know the limitations so they can use them with care, tho I'd happily burn them all)

One reason is state demographics. California, for example, is expected to feel the enrollment cliff keenly (and are being prevented from making up the difference with international students). If we weren't destroying our universities nationally, though, this would be a great opportunity

I am not supposed to teach it until I get permission in March. Class started today. They really do not give a flip that they are working with student's education and stealing their money.

Texas Tech System restricts race and gender teaching
Tech, now the second Texas public university system to add similar teaching restrictions, had earlier directed faculty to follow state and federal guidance recognizing only two sexes.
I have filled out the form justifying why I should be allowed to teach Plato's republic, even though they include discussion of things that the Board of Regents things sound like gender identity and sexual orientation (Plato didn't have those concepts).

After reading through more threads, I think your kids have hella more to deal with than I did, and I don't want to take any of the focus from them. But thank you for this compassion. β€οΈβ€οΈβ€οΈ You are an incredible parent.

In the American south "coke" is a generic name for a soda. I don't think Pepsi is the generic name for soda anywhere.

By far one of the best parts of being an academic is putting ideas out into the world and seeing them refracted through other minds, who help you see things more richly than you did before.

Texas universities deploy AI for course audits
Records obtained by The Texas Tribune show how universities are using the technology to reshape curriculum under political pressure, raising concerns about academic freedom.
These professors try to put in their learning objectives that students will *learn* things! The nerve! The public simply will not pay for a university education where students *learn*!!! jobs and football is all that matters, you nincompoops!

It's important to note the scale of these searches, thousands of courses. At TTU we haven't seen the process yet, but it includes all course materials. That could be thousands of pages for a single course. They want to do it in one month. They need speed. Accuracy optional.

Chancellor of #TTU issued a memo today triggering a review of all course content related to gender, race, and sexual orientation, effective immediately.
Which is more amateur? issuing it four days before finals, or not having a final step to the process (so how could anything be approved?)

I teach an applied social epistemology course and I think it is pretty important for life skills. (Ok, you didn't have to do a deep dive into conspiracy theories, but you do need to think about experts, reliability online, trust, social epistemic responsibility, white ignorance, etc,)
