Did you know that science labs work like small business entrepreneurs? Faculty hired on strength of ideas, get some startup $ to last 3-4 yrs. After that is grants- grants pay all our + our traineesβ salaries + scientific work. Funding in this country is frozen. That means scientific work stops
Announcing the #NephJC internship, @nephjc.bsky.social and @kireports.bsky.social joining forces

We have a new EO launching the MAHA Commission. There's a lot of enthusiasm in nutrition spaces that MAHA will finally bring a spotlight to food, but I have a number of concerns - from un-serious descriptions of the problems we face to chemophobic dogwhistles
kcklatt.substack.com/p/the-maha-c...
Interpretation for the non-scientists: When faculty get NIH grants, the University gets some extra cash to make sure the research is supported. NIH just cut that $$ by a LOT. That means Unis are less likely to support research. Most research in the US is done at Unis, so... it's bad π§ͺ
No study section...no grant reviews
No grant reviews...no grants awarded
No grants awarded...no research
No research...no functional NIH
I really thought I was not going to be able to sleepβ¦well done, body! And also massive thanks to my toddler for sleeping through the night π
Trying to protect my peace: "Do not engage for the next 4 years"

And the βis this a freaking joke?β continues. Seriously?
I am excited to chat about our work on dietary fiber for managing chronic kidney disease during the Future of the Microbiome Winter Session! My talk will be on the 21st, but this is a free 3-day online session starting tomorrow

Happy to connect! Though, I have the perfect person for that: Melanie Betz, not sure sheβs joined yet but can share her info.
I really enjoyed hosting my good friend, Dr. Brett Loman from the University of Illinois, who shared his career path with my nutrition science undergraduate students and also gave a seminar on his exciting research on improving stress resilience through diet-microbiota interactions #NutSky
I feel like Iβm living in @theonion.com alternative reality π
I tried out making a nutrition starter pack #NutSky please suggest more go.bsky.app/4qMQUeQ

Thank you, @hswapnil.bsky.social! Thank you for doing this and for including me, @dylanmackayphd.bsky.social. Still fairly new, but some more #NephSky peeps @hillgallant.bsky.social @drkellylambert.bsky.social
Wanted to recirculate my starter pack for #LatinMedsky! Letβs all give a shout out and a follow to the awesome Latino/Latina/Latine physicians out there!
We have to be living in an alternative reality. Is this a freaking joke?
Not at the moment; we have ongoing studies on dietary fiber, nutrient-dense snacks, and plant-based food patterns π€
At Purdue, I co-direct the Clinical and Translational Nutrition Research Lab with my better half. Our work tries to comprehensively examine renal nutrition problems. We are lucky to have a great group of undergraduate and graduate students, visiting scholars, and an amazing lab tech/manager!
What a fantastic idea βstarter packsβ are! Nicely done, @bsky.app !
Ahhh, missed opportunity! Here is my first baby, Kali. Also happy to be in a supportive environment π
Oh, I'm completely a newbie. The first day was full of cat posts because I said one of my interests was animals; I wish there was a "dog" category instead π. Now, thanks to @hswapnil.bsky.social #NephSky starter pack, I see most Neph peep's posts π
