most of Bollywood was written by Muslim writers esp before the 90s, so the influence of Urdu goes deep into Bollywood music and dialogues

they must’ve changed it since I originally saw it. before they had “speaking Hindi” in the Urdu scenes and “speaking Urdu” in the one Punjabi line 😭

it’s probably because they’re both indo-european languages so the core structure is simpler for english speakers to grasp. the reason why so many weeks tho is probably the script, as arabic script can be daunting to newbies. arabic itself has a lot of grammar & a different way of thinking to english

no cuz my uni has the same issue. they did that for both arabic and urdu/persian for the welcome sign they posted in the library across an entire wall. they fixed the arabic but forgot the urdu/persian and kept the mistake but renovated the entire bookstore in the process.

In Hindi-Urdu, it’s بطخ बत्तख़ battakh /bət.təx/, which is a hypercorrection of Classical Persian بطک batak /bət.ək/

Even in Hindi, some Tatsama are rarely used, as most ppl use Kitaab किताब book instead of Pustak पुस्तक, as the complete removal of Perso Arabic from everyday use is a slow process

Modern Standard Hindi is filled with direct Sanskrit borrowings called Tatsama तत्सम to replace Perso-Arabic loanwords, whereas Urdu only retains Tadbhava तद्भव which are Sanskrit words which’ve evolved over time

spoken Hindi and Urdu are definitely mutually intelligible, it’s just the formal languages which differ. Modern Standard Hindi (शुद्ध हिंदी) is the rejection of Perso-Arabic whereas formal Urdu embraces Perso-Arabic
