Oh, oh, now read Priya Parkerβs The Art of Gathering!
I was the windsurfing instructor on a vacation charter yacht in the Caribbean. π΄π β΅
Iβm good with a decision to stop flip flopping between times. But the astronomer in me aches BC would pick Daylight Saving, not Standard. The Sun will never cross the meridian at noon π

@derekbruff.bsky.social I listen to podcasts on my way to work. If an episode inspires me, the next hour is when I have the spark to get things done. Today it's Intentional Teaching about grading. I can act bc you've already posted the transcript π«‘ If you wonder if it's worth it, yes it is!
Iβve got a Nigerian colleague at work. I asked him, how do you say hi to your friends? You say, βhow far?β which means how far are you on the road to hell? If youβre doing fine, you say βnot far πβ
But if youβre having a shitty day, you droop and shake your head and say βoooh, so far πβ¦β
@karencosta.bsky.social Sorry, Karen, not a blurbable post π but I need people to know about your book π£π£π£ Already shared your @tihe.bsky.social podcast with 2 faculty, and Iβll be encouraging they read Educatorβs Guide!
β¦purchased at my local, independent bookstore @mcnallyrobinson.com !

Loved your teaching story. You know, just your classic think-pair-share to spark a conversation π₯ I hope you have a bookcase big enough to hold all the teaching π, Ashley!
Environment Canada makes you cringe, makes me giggle. We got a province-wide 'yellow snow warning" this morning. I mean, c'mon! Did no one at Environment Canada run this new warning system past their kids?!?
That's the video version of the Montillation of Traxoline, often used to show educators that you can get 100% on a reading quiz with 0% comprehension!
Yep, all glued together. I stacked them and it got a bit unbalanced. Today, Iβd alternate front and back so full triangle is down the middle of the stack.
Hang fr each corner, draw vertical lines. Where lines cross is center-of-mass. Measure location with a ruler. Then do integrals to verify π
Recycled long ago π’ but imagine this βhalf-pyramidβ made fr layers of cardboard
45-45-90 triangle, vert at (0,0) (5,0) (0,5)
2nd layer (0,0) (4,0) (4,1) (0,5)
3rd layer (0,0) (3,0) (3,2) (0,5)
4th layer (0,0) (2,0) (2,3) (0,5)
5th layer (0,0) (1,0) (1,4) (0,5)
Density rho(x,y)=5-x
Have fun!
Oh look, Melonie @quioui.bsky.social ! You and Josh can talk about sourdough and the state of #HigherEd!
Capstone (and highlight for me) in Calc 2 was center of mass, moment of inertia integrals. I'd bring full and empty cans of soup to roll down the table, oddly-shaped (by integrable) objects to hang and find center of mass. I made cardboard triangle that got thicker and thicker for variable density.
Highly recommend The Art of Gathering! It's full of stories -- none of them about teaching -- but it's sooo applicable. It's changed the way I promote and facilitate all my #HigherEd workshops, book clubs, communities of practice, everything!
Photo of my Little Free Library. It's a rectangular box built around a stainless steel medicine cabinet. The Library is about 2' wide, 3' high, and 1' deep and it sits on two sturdy 4x4 posts. It's Christmastime and the Library has twinkly lights, decorations, all covered in a peaceful sprinkling of snow. There's a "Little Free Library" sticker on the door and some holly.
@analog-ashley.bsky.social @grimalkina.bsky.social By this time next year π€ I'll be living in my new house. Sad to leave behind my Little Free Library, though. Well, until this morning when I listened to you talking having a party to open yours! I will build a new one! We will have βπ©!
Did you know that gas-powered leaf blowers are the new shovel? Each lovely peaceful snowy Friday evening π in Winnipeg is followed by the blowers firing up Saturday at 7:30 am π€¬
Do the peer observers use a protocol or template or something? Are you able to share it -- I'd love to see it!

THAT is the part of your job you find tedious and outsourced?!? Why did they pick you to teach the course? What parts of teaching do you feel are worthy of your time?!?
I listen to half a dozen podcasts about teaching in #HigherEd and every one of them is about gen fucking ai π« Podcasters, youβre not earning my attention because your topic is fresh and shiny, youβre losing my trust because there are so many others things I want to learn about.
Tried something new at a Teams meeting. I wanted input on 4 topics. I needed to label the topics but 1,2,3,4 or A,B,C,D impose undeserved, artificial hierarchy or importance. So I asked people to post in the chat, starting with (polarbear) (moose) (bison) (bunny) and the chat erupted with π»ββοΈπ«π¦¬π!
I guess that would have helped, huh? It's a used clothing store, with a Value Village vibe.
I pass a place everyday on my way to work called Platoβs Closet. And everyday I wrack my brain wondering if itβs some kind of, what, metaphor? allegory? allusion? like Herculesβ Gym or Demeterβs Bakery.
My mouth has only just healed from all the Rockets we bought at Halloween. I mean, who can resist the megasize bag, right? Taken me months to get through it!
Iβm going to keep the face of the radio, complete w knobs and backlit dial that lights up when you turn the knob (with a hearty, tangible cuh-lick!)
My new old Electrohome Radio-Phonograph Combination. Itβs a white oak cabinet, 30β high, 36β wide, and 16β deep. The right 2/3 of the front is a speaker covered in groovy brown cloth with a grid of white and brass lines. A door on the left 1/3 opens to reveal an AM radio with a beautiful glass faceplate, 4 knobs, a turn table on a sliding shelf, and storage for your records.
My new old cabinet is an Electrohome βRiviera Aβ Radio-Phonograph Combo c. 1955. The red disk I found inside is the adapter that lets you play 45βs. It pops into the big hole on a 45 so the record fits snugly on the record playerβs center post.
I canβt say exactly what this is or Iβll give away the mystery. Iβm holding a red plastic, circular disk, maybe inch and a half in diameter. The disk isnβt solid, though. Thereβs a hole in the middle and then three curved, springy arms connected around the middle hole.
I bought a 1960βs cabinet that Iβm transforming into a bathroom vanity for my new Midcentury Modern house. I found this inside. Can you guess the cabinetβs original purpose?
